The Agri-Environmental Development Coordinator is responsible for the development and implementation of both soil health and nutrient management strategies for Prince Edward Island. The key objectives are to encourage Island agricultural producers to implement soil health and nutrient management practices that will help improve overall soil quality and productivity, maintain net crop returns, while also minimizing nutrient impacts on the environment.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Development and implementation of soil health and nutrient management strategies for P.E.I.;
  • Developing policy and initiatives to promote soil health and environmentally responsible nutrient management planning;
  • Establishing criteria for P.E.I. Nutrient Management Plans;
  • Establishing environmentally acceptable nutrient management techniques/applications based on watershed risk as determined by ground water and surface water nitrate levels;
  • Developing, coordinating, and implementing nutrient management and soil health on-farm research trials;
  • Overseeing the development of soil health testing processes and the development and delivery of extension activities related to soil health and soil health testing;
  • Developing and delivering incentive programs to encourage the use of nutrient management and improve soil health;
  • Developing and conducting provincial training sessions for nutrient management and soil health activities for provincial nutrient management specialists and producers;
  • Ensuring nutrient management plans developed by private sector Nutrient Management Planners meet Provincial standards and the eligibility criteria for Provincial incentives that encourage adoption of Nutrient Management Planning;
  • Working with the PEI Analytical Laboratories on development and updating of soil nutrient, soil health, and soil quality testing and coordinate the generating of soil recommendations;
  • Advising producers, producer organizations, industry organizations and departmental /interdepartmental working groups on recent soil health research and beneficial management practices;
  • Coordinating on-farm demonstration projects in cooperation with specialists, farm organizations, farmers and agri-business, and prepare research and funding proposals with stakeholder groups to develop these research programs and trials;
  • Developing Nutrient Management BMP’s (Beneficial Management Practices), that will minimize the environmental impacts of nutrient inputs while maintaining productivity and encourage BMP’s that promote a positive impact on soil health;
  • Presenting and reporting research to agricultural organizations, producers and provincial department staff;
  • Developing education programs on soil health and nutrient management practices and related environmental issues;
  • Responsible for the Soil Quality Monitoring Project; including the field work for the collection of soil samples across P.E.I.;
  • Other assigned duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have a Master of Science in Environmental Science, Agriculture or related field with emphasis on Soil Science and Agronomy;
    OR
  • B.Sc. in Agriculture Majoring in Soil Science with an emphasis on Agronomy and at least 5 years related experience in developing and implementing Nutrient Management Programs and Techniques.
  • Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered.
  • Must have at least 3 years related experience using Geographic Information System (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) technologies.
  • Must have a minimum of 3 years related experience in conducting applied scientific research.
  • Must be eligible for membership in a professional organization or society.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Skills in computer applications.
  • Nutrient Management Planning Certification is an asset.
