Nursing is a self-regulated profession governed through the College. A nurse is responsible for practicing in accordance with the standards of the profession, and for keeping current and competent throughout his/her nursing career (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2009).

Qualifications:

  • Current Certificate of Competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario required
  • Dialysis Training preferred
  • BScN preferred
  • NVCI preferred
  • GPA preferred
  • ACLS preferred
  • Member of RNAO preferred
  • RNAO Best Practice Champion preferred
  • Completion of LEAN training preferred
  • Completion of a Leadership/Management course preferred
  • Completion of Research course/understanding of Research studies and its process such as but not limited to data collection, interpretation and reporting preferred

Skill, Ability and Experience:

  • 2 years recent experience in dialysis nursing preferred
  • Proficient with electronic documentation and Microsoft Office required
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interprofessional skills required
  • Demonstrated customer service excellence required
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships required
  • Demonstrated ability to delegate, plan, organize and set priorities required
  • Demonstrated ability to fulfil role within Attendance Support Program parameters required
  • Ability to apply critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, conflict resolution and prioritization skills to nursing duties required

Principal Duties:

  • Attends interdisciplinary rounds on unit biweekly via OTN with LHSC
  • Provides appropriate nursing care and teaching for stable/long-term renal failure patients and their families
  • Assist with daily operations, problem solving, staff orientation, quality coordination, resources utilization and efficiency, budgetary control, safety and other related duties specific to the unit.
  • Ensures accurate and timely implementation of Change Initiatives and Research including critically analysing the evidence and incorporate appropriate interventions into practice
  • Act as a coach, mentor, resource and positive role model for all staff and students
  • Participates in developing unit standards that are evidence-based, and comply with the College of Nurses’ standards and Bluewater Health’s standards

Completes daily staff assignment according to patient needs, continuity of care and priorities of the unit

  • Maintains a continuous flow of up-to-date information between physicians, patients/families, nursing staff, other health care professionals and hospital departments as well as community partners as appropriate
  • Receives, reviews and accepts appropriate patients referred for treatment within the Dialysis clinic utilizing admission criteria
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary team in developing and implementing treatment
  • Meets daily with the Program Manager to review all patient care activities, patients’ and condition/status, staff scheduling issues, any issues or concerns that affect the integrity of the Unit, patients or staff
  • Monitor bed assignment to accommodate needs of the patients/unit in accordance with BWH Bed Management Policy
  • Responsible for delivering care (i.e. assist on unit/patient assignment) when required
  • Responsible for completing RL6 Risk/Feedback files on occurrence
  • Completes continuing education requirements as necessary
  • Assists Program Manager to implement Dialysis unit goals and objectives including facilitating quality improvement initiatives
  • Participates in various committees such as Staff Meetings, Unit Based Council, Rehabilitation and Vascular Program Council etc.
  • Other related duties as required
