About the role
Review tasks with Foreman to ensure adequate approach and construction methods. Generating survey notes and record keeping of grades and layout established in the field. Providing complete as-built/redline drawings throughout the progression of the job. Works directly with all site employees and indirectly with the Operations Dept as part of a collaborative team-based culture. Establish construction layout and grade for all utilities based on the stake layout provided by the Surveyor. Take part in site layout with surveyor, offset and transfer layout information to offset stakes and/or protect layout, and understand layout provided. Clearly communicate with all members of the crew to ensure that all utilities are installed in their correct location. Accurately record all as-built information into the field book, and transfer the information onto the project record drawings. Achieve the correct grade by directing Equipment Operators to adjust grade by moving earth, gravel and other material. Measure distances from reference points to locate boundaries of construction site. Verify curvature of graded surface using both manual and laser methods. Report and conflicting information on drawings to Foreman immediately. Responsible for equipment checks and verifying the precision of a device prior to using it. Reporting any defective equipment to supervisor for repair. Assist Foreman or perform as Acting Foreman in his or her absence. Assist crew with Labourer duties when required. Be willing and able to learn general construction practices involving road construction. Have an understanding of the issues involving ground disturbance and implement safe work procedures while adhering to safety policies and procedures in accordance with WorkSafeBC regulations and Conwest’s standards. Other duties as assigned by the Foreman. A minimum of 5 years’ experience in civil construction including earthworks and underground utilities would be an asset. Ability to use survey instruments (i.e.: rotary laser, transit, dual-plane) to establish correct line and grade for earthworks, underground utilities, and roadworks Experience using total stations and GPS equipment would be an asset. Ability to thoroughly read, understand, and interpret civil construction plans and drawings as well as architectural, structural, landscape and mechanical drawings for building excavation work. Ability to read geotechnical drawings would be also be essential if working in bulk excavation division. Ability to identify any design conflicts that may arise and report to the site supervisor. Mathematically inclined to accurately calculate or extrapolate finished elevations. Ability to work with the engineer and the surveyor to solve problems. Ability to achieve correct grade by directing equipment operators to adjust grade by moving earth, gravel, and other materials. Ability to measure distances from reference points or offsets to accurately install utilities. Ability to verify curvature of graded surface area using a hand level. Ability to work under pressure in some situations. Must be able to meet all safety requirements and applicable safety policies. Must be willing to become a member of CLAC. Must have a valid Class 5 driver’s license and a clean driver’s abstract.
Compensation: $38.81 - $41.76 per hour
