About this position
Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Manager of Accounting is a full-time position on the National Music Centre’s (NMC) finance team. The successful candidate will have strong full-cycle accounting skills, exceptional attention to detail, hands-on approach, and a passion for the not-for-profit sector.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Responsible for the management of accounting functions and month-end close process, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, G&A allocation, capital assets, and investments
- Ensure preparation of monthly financial statements in Excel for NMC and the King Eddy (KE) in an accurate and timely manner
- Review and approve accounts payable EFT/cheque run and monthly bank reconciliations
- Review journal entries, payroll entries, and account reconciliations
- Coordinate information for quarterly forecasts and prepare variance analysis and other supporting reports for department directors, senior management, Board of Directors (BOD), and committees
- Prepare quarterly deferred contribution fund allocations and reporting requirements
- Prepare revenue and expense reports to assist fund development in grant applications and reporting
- Assist with the preparation and review of the accounting records for KE, including inventory, supply processing and reconciliations, sales and expenses reporting, cash flow management, and forecasting
- Coordinate the annual T4A and T4A-N processes
- Review and approve GST returns
- Prepare annual T3010 charity return for NMC and T2 corporate return for KE
- Prepare annual insurance renewal documents
- Coordinate/lead the annual interim and year-end external audit, including preparing the audit plan and assisting with or preparing the annual audit working papers
- Coordinate and collect staff data for HR including vacation/time off, annual benefit allocation forms, and other documentation
- Manage and mentor three full-time junior accounting direct reports
- Maintain all accounting records for NMC and KE in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles
- Make recommendations, develop policies and procedures, and automate accounting systems, internal control systems, and other processes
Qualifications
- Completion of an accounting designation program (CA/CPA-CA)
- 7 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in the not-for-profit sector
- Ability to maintain a professional and confidential approach to the day-to-day operational tasks
- Knowledge of Canadian GAAP (ASPE, not-for-profit)
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word)
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
- Strong aptitude for working in a deadline-oriented environment
- Experience with Quickbooks
- Experience with managing audit process
- Systems implementation experience is an asset
- Ability to prioritize and multi-task
- Highly organized and self-motivated
