As a Repairman Bridges, you will perform planned and emergency repairs on the City's inventory of bridges, tunnels, retaining walls, noise barriers and timber stairways. You will assess any damage, repair deteriorated concrete including removing old concrete, installing formwork, mixing and placing concrete and finishing surfaces. Primary duties include:

  • Assess damage, repair timber bridges and stairways including removing damaged timber and cutting, drilling and installing new timber.
  • Drive and operate various vehicles including bucket and under-bridge inspection trucks and equipment such as cranes and compressors.
  • Provide direction to Repairman Bridges Trainees including showing employees how to perform work and providing feedback.
  • Perform general bridge crew duties such as installing traffic set-up, removing snow from job sites and sandblasting structures.
  • Replace bridge railings including cutting and removing railings, installing temporary railings or barriers and installing repaired railings that have been welded or galvanized.
  • Perform pre-trip vehicle and equipment inspection, prioritize the day's work, load equipment, materials and tools and drive to job sites.

Qualifications

  • High school and at least 3 years of related experience.
  • Possess a working knowledge of specialized repair materials including fast setting cements, mortars and epoxies is required.
  • Experience with various anchoring techniques such as chemical and mechanical anchors is a requirement.
  • Experience with a variety of tools both electric and air powered is required.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's Licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending.
  • A valid Class 3 Driver's Licence (or provincial equivalent) with an air brake endorsement to be completed within three months of hire is required.
  • Ability to interpret bridge design drawings would be an asset.
  • Excellent time management and communication skills.

Working Conditions: Work outside and at heights, drive and work in traffic and operate various pieces of equipment.

Pre-employment Requirements

  • A security clearance will be conducted.
  • Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.

Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
