About the role

*This posting will be used to hire 3 Mentors for terms ending April 30, 2027*

Immigrant and Refugee Student Services (IRSS) supports immigrant and refugee students during their academic journey to UWinnipeg and beyond. IRSS is looking for dedicated UWinnipeg students to act as mentors a to assist new students with their transition and retention at UWinnipeg.

Representative Duties:

  • Matched with 2-3 first-year immigrant and refugee students to assist in their transition to university life during the academic term (Fall 2026 & Winter 2027).
  • Matched newcomer-to-newcomer or Canadian-born with newcomer by pairing upper-year students with those navigating the transition to post-secondary education at the University of Winnipeg.
  • Provide social support and assistance with cultural transition for new students by organizing activities that engage them to socialize and transition into the campus.
  • Encourage and assist students to focus on their goals to achieve their degrees at the University of Winnipeg.
  • Conduct campus tours when requested by the newcomer agencies or community organizations at the University of Winnipeg.
  • Participate in the IRSS annual welcome lunch and the WUSC Meet and Greet welcome lunch in August and October every year.
  • Accompany the IRSS Coordinator to presentations, school visits, and community engagement off campus when needed.
  • Respect the privacy and confidentiality of the mentees.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Coordinator or IRSS Student Assistant.
  • Time commitment varies depending on the time of year. Mentors are expected to communicate once per week during the first academic term to establish a working relationship. Afterwards, when needed, the mentees will reach out to their match. In addition, there will be two mandatory 1 hour orientation sessions. Mentors are also required to represent Immigrant and Refugee Support Services events such as career fairs, Open House, and Future Student Night, alongside the IRSS Coordinator.

Qualifications:

  • A current student or a recent graduate of the University of Winnipeg.
  • Must have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Experience with newcomer issues in Canada, especially language and cultural barriers, is considered an asset.
  • Ability to listen and recognize issues requiring attention to help students and ensure retention.
  • Knowledge of other cultures and traditions is considered an asset.
  • A valid Manitoba Driver’s License is considered an asset.
  • Ability to work throughout the 2026-2027 academic year from August 2026 to the end of April 2027.
  • Ability to listen and recognize opportunities, as well as challenges.
  • Accept different points of view and be respectful of others.
  • Be a positive role model.
  • Able to assist students in focusing on goals and provide encouragement.

An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.

Condition(s) of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Able to work occasionally on evenings and weekends for events.
