The role in a nutshell
In this leadership role, you will be responsible for planning, directing, and delivering major capital studies from concept (FEL 1) through to feasibility (FEL 3) within the Custom Metallurgical Assets (CMA) Group. You will develop and implement the overall study execution strategy, establish the study team structure, and lead cross-functional resources to ensure the study meets its objectives, scope, schedule, and budget.
Acting as the Owner’s team leader, you will coordinate internal stakeholders, external engineering service providers, and EPC/EPCM partners to integrate technical, commercial, and operational considerations into a single, robust study plan. You will identify value-creation opportunities, manage project risks, and ensure all deliverables align with the Capital Management Framework and stage-gate requirements.
The role will require a balance of strategic leadership and hands-on execution—guiding high-performing teams, managing stakeholder relationships, and applying strong project controls to deliver high-quality study outcomes. By combining deep technical knowledge with commercial acumen, you will ensure that each study positions the CMA group for sound investment decisions and successful project execution.
More specifically, you will be expected to:
Lead and motivate cross-functional project teams, promoting a collaborative, effective, and results-oriented environment.
Develop the overall study execution strategy, including defining the study development path, key milestones, and stage-gate requirements.
Design and establish the appropriate study team structure, identifying internal resource needs and engaging external service providers as required.
Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external partners to align on study objectives, scope, and execution strategy, ensuring shared accountability and integration across functions.
Oversee the planning and execution of study phases, ensuring project scopes, schedules, budgets, and deliverables meet Capital Management Framework requirements.
Identify and realize value-creation opportunities throughout the study phases, maximizing return on investment and efficiency.
Monitor project performance and proactively identify areas for improvement, promoting innovation and continuous improvement in systems, processes, and deliverables.
Manage project approval processes and ensure timely submission of required documentation for gate reviews and investment decisions.
Oversee the development, maintenance, and forecasting of project schedules and budgets; review and approve monthly project reports.
Maintain and manage key project control tools including change registers, trending logs, risk registers, and other monitoring systems.
performance tracking methodologies such as Earned Value Management (EVM), including use of S-curves and Cost Performance Index (CPI), to ensure effective project control.
Oversee and maintain the project risk register, ensuring timely identification, mitigation, and communication of risks across the project lifecycle.
Do you have what it takes?
Tertiary qualifications in Engineering (Metallurgical, Processing, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil), Project Management, or a related discipline.
A minimum of 15 years of professional experience, including at least 5 years in project and study management with a strong emphasis on project controls. Experience in resource-based industries is considered an asset.
Solid understanding of risk management principles and their application in capital projects.
Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and develop high-performing teams to meet business and project objectives.
Well-developed financial and economic knowledge, featuring the ability to weigh trade-offs and increase value.
Experience in building and managing stakeholder and client relationships, as well as leading cross-functional internal teams.
Proficiency in project management methodologies and software tools such as Primavera P6 and Microsoft Project. PMP certification is an asset.
Up-to-date knowledge of industry best practices, with a proactive approach to continuous improvement.
Proficient communication and presentation skills, with the capacity to convey complex information clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.
Innovative, solution-focused, and collaborative mindset, with a commitment to delivering results.
Highly developed organizational and time management capabilities, enabling the management of several projects simultaneously across different time zones.
Travel: You will be willing to travel domestically and/or internationally for approximately 20-30% of the time and work with colleagues located in different time zones.
Languages: Working knowledge of French and fluency in English (written and spoken).
Location: Ideally based in Laval, QC but we may consider candidates based in Toronto.
The interview process may start prior to the closing date of the posting.
