Job Title: Systems Engineering TechnologistJob Description
This role is a hands-on Systems Engineering Technologist position supporting shipboard communication and control systems programs in an active shipyard environment. You will focus on integration, configuration, troubleshooting, verification and validation, and engineering close-out activities for RF, digital, network, and analog subsystems. The work takes place primarily at Vancouver Shipyards and onboard naval and civilian vessels, offering a high level of autonomy, exposure to complex naval shipbuilding programs, and the opportunity to contribute directly to critical defence and marine systems.
Responsibilities
Support shipboard communication and control systems programs in an active shipyard environment. Perform hands-on system integration, configuration, testing, and troubleshooting of RF, digital, network, and analog subsystems. Execute verification and validation activities to ensure systems meet design, performance, and compliance requirements. Support engineering close-out activities, including documentation, test reports, and resolution of outstanding technical issues. Work primarily at Vancouver Shipyards and onboard naval and civilian vessels to support on-site efforts. Install, configure, and test electrical and electronic equipment, including cable installation and related infrastructure. Use electrical test equipment such as digital multimeters (DMMs), oscilloscopes, and other specialized tools to diagnose and resolve issues. Read and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings and technical documentation to guide installation, integration, and troubleshooting activities. Operate independently or within small teams to execute integration and test tasks with minimal supervision. Support harbour acceptance tests (HAT), sea acceptance tests (SAT), set-to-work (STW), inspections, and onboard trials when required. Apply knowledge of navigation, military standards, and relevant marine or defence design standards during system implementation and testing. Configure and support routers, switches, and other networked components within shipboard systems. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and customer representatives in both military and civilian environments to resolve technical issues. Ensure all work complies with applicable standards, controlled goods requirements, and security protocols. Contribute immediately to ongoing projects by leveraging prior experience in systems engineering or hardware technologist environments.
Essential Skills
Minimum 4+ years of experience in a systems engineering or hardware technologist environment. Background in naval, shipbuilding, industrial, or transportation electrical systems. Proven hands-on experience with system integration, configuration, testing, and troubleshooting. Ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings and technical documentation independently. Experience using electrical test equipment such as digital multimeters (DMMs), oscilloscopes, and related tools. Proficiency using common hand tools and electrical tools for installation and maintenance tasks. Ability and willingness to work 100% on-site in an active shipyard environment. Eligibility for Controlled Goods and NATO Secret security clearance as a Canadian citizen or permanent resident with 10+ years in Canada. Strong troubleshooting skills across electrical and electronic systems. Comfort operating in active shipyard and onboard vessel environments. College diploma in a technical program or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
5–8+ years of experience as a hands-on hardware or systems engineering technologist, particularly in naval, shipbuilding, or defence environments. Experience working with RF systems, electronics, or networking systems. Exposure to electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and electromagnetic interference (EMI) standards, as well as shock and vibration standards. Familiarity with Canadian marine or defence design standards and military standards. Experience using LabVIEW or similar technical software tools. Previous involvement in harbour acceptance tests (HAT), sea acceptance tests (SAT), set-to-work (STW), inspections, or onboard trials. Experience supporting naval or defence programs and working within related regulatory frameworks. Knowledge of navigation systems and radio frequency (RF) concepts. Experience with routers, switches, and other network devices in integrated systems. Ability to adapt quickly to shipyard processes, standards, and documentation requirements. Comfort working with high autonomy and trust, with minimal supervision on integration and test activities. Motivation to gain or maintain NATO Secret clearance and develop a long-term career in defence and maritime systems.
Work Environment
This role is based 100% on-site at Vancouver Shipyards and involves regular work in active shipyard, laboratory, and onboard vessel environments. You will work around operational shipbuilding activities and perform physical tasks such as installation, inspections, configuration, and testing of electrical, electronic, RF, and networked systems. The position requires frequent use of electrical test equipment, including digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, and other diagnostic tools, as well as common hand and electrical tools. You will interact with both military and civilian customer personnel and collaborate closely with engineering and technical teams on a flagship Canadian naval shipbuilding program. The environment offers hands-on work with real systems rather than desk-only tasks, high autonomy for experienced technologists, strong potential for contract extension or future permanent opportunities, and the chance to work on complex defence and maritime systems while pursuing NATO Secret clearance.
