As a Journeyperson Signals Electrician/Technician, you will be responsible for the construction and maintenance of Traffic Signals, Communications and Light Rail Transit (LRT) Signal systems. Primary duties include:

  • Install, construct, repair, and troubleshoot LRT signals, communications, and equipment.
  • Inspect and test the operation of gate crossing, switch machines, and interlockings.
  • Configure, test and wire traffic signal cabinets, intersections, signalized crosswalks, and detection systems.
  • Install and program communications equipment including radios, fibre optics and cellular components.
  • Install and repair steel structures for traffic signals.
  • Troubleshoot and repair traffic signals, signalized crosswalks and detection systems.
  • Perform maintenance on Digital Message Signs, Pan-Tilt-Zoom cameras and other intelligent traffic system equipment.

Qualifications

  • A completed 2 year diploma in Electronics Engineering Technology; OR
  • A valid Journeyperson Electrician certificate, or equivalent as recognized by the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board.
  • A valid Full Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent), with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending is required.
  • Knowledge of relay components and logic, fibre switching, and Direct Current (DC) power systems is required.
  • Ability to read and interpret logic programming, electronics/electro mechanical, and civil schematic drawings is required.
  • A valid Class 3 Driver's License with 'Q' endorsement will be considered an asset.
  • Ability to work well and exercise good judgement and diplomacy under pressure, while dealing with multiple interested parties, responsibilities, and projects.
  • Must be able to collaborate and work cohesively in a team environment.

Working Conditions: This position will perform work in an outdoor environment, with exposure to various heights, weather conditions, confined space, noise, LRT right of ways, roadways, electrical and mechanical hazards.

Pre-employment Requirements

  • Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.

Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.

Compensation: $56.02 per hour (2026 Rates)

Days of Work: This position works a non-standard work week.

Applicants must be available to work evenings, weekends,

shift work and overtime.

Hours of work: Non- standard 40 hour work week
