About the job

Delivering large and complex transportation projects, you will:

  • work with senior management

  • work cooperatively with other transportation professionals to develop programs for capital and expansion investments

  • support the delivery of a regional capital program

  • administer corridor investment planning activities

  • provide technical engineering assessments

  • ensure the protection of the ministry's interests

  • resolve complex planning and engineering issues

About us

The Transportation Infrastructure Management Division (TIMD) works in collaboration with other divisions to support MTO's commitment to provide a safe, efficient, and reliable transportation system by delivering on a capital program, including the planning, engineering and construction, and other related program administration functions of the provincial highway network and other provincial transportation infrastructure. Program activities also involve investment planning and asset management, engineering and design, property acquisition, new construction planning and sourcing, asset rehabilitation and renewal, contract management and oversight, and environmental assessments.

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements

  • You are licensed with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
  • The position requires the successful candidate to have a valid class G driver's licence or equivalent. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.

Leadership and Guidance Skills

You have:

  • well developed leadership and project management skills to assign and schedule work, lead project teams, establish and adjust schedules, assign resources, supervise and direct staff; manage service providers, including acquisition, administration and evaluation of consultants.
  • the ability to prioritize and execute tasks at moment's notice to support stakeholder correspondence and area office service requests.

Civil Engineering and Legislation Knowledge

You have:

  • knowledge of theories, principles and practices of civil engineering related to highway engineering.
  • working knowledge of related fields, including geotechnical, pavement design, structural, drainage, surveys, electrical, traffic, and construction practices.
  • working knowledge of, and demonstrated ability to interpret and apply, related legislative acts (Environmental Assessment Act, Public Transportation and Highway Improvement Act, Drainage Act, etc.).

Communication, Interpersonal, Negotiation and Relationship - Building Skills

You have:

  • communication and presentation skills to make presentations and represent the ministry as an expert witness on engineering-related matters.
  • relationship-building skills to establish effective working relationships with colleagues, associates, senior officials and the public.
  • written communication skills to prepare, write, edit and/or present complex materials.
  • negotiation skills to work with external service providers and consultants.

Project Management Knowledge

You have:

  • knowledge of project management techniques required to manage projects of moderate size and complexity, including working knowledge of Value Engineering techniques.

Problem-Solving, Analytical and Decision-Making Skills

You:

  • are able to identify problems and prepare reports and alternative recommendations on all engineering matters and technical matters.
  • are able to assess recommendations for technical adequacy and consistency with ministry policies.
  • have analytical and problem-solving skills to coordinate and develop infrastructure plans, conduct trade-off analysis, and produce listings of capital programs.
  • have strong analytical skills to prepare and recommend alternative designs balancing economic benefit, risk and environmental impact.
