Position Overview:
Reporting to the Assessment, Risk & Reclamation Services Manager, Solstice is seeking a skilled reclamation professional who is interested in growing with a dedicated team and contributing to meaningful environmental work. This role is ideal for an environmental scientist with strong experience in reclamation supervision, detailed site assessments, pre-reclamation assessments, and technical report writing.
Duties will include assistance with proposal and budget preparation, project management, mentorship of junior staff in field assessment, regulatory approvals, advise and environmental assessment processes, and client relationship development. The candidate will be expected to execute field programs acting as a field and safety lead, as required.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Leading and supporting reclamation supervision activities in accordance with regulatory and environmental standards
- Conducting detailed site assessments and pre-reclamation assessments
- Preparing high-quality technical and regulatory reports, including assessment findings and recommendations
- Providing environmental oversight during ground disturbance activities
- Coordinating with project managers, clients, regulators, and field staff
- Ensuring compliance with applicable environmental legislation, guidelines, and best practices
- Supporting project planning, scheduling, and quality control
- Assisting with data collection, interpretation, and documentation
Experience:
Minimum 4 years of experience in the environmental consulting industry, with direct experience planning and leading various environmental field programs and associated reporting including environmental assessments and reclamation activities.
Education:
- Technical degree, BSc or MSc in Environmental Science, Engineering, Hydrogeology, Biology, Ecology, Forestry or other program with an environmental focus.
- Must be registered as a Professional or be a Professional-in-training (example: Agrologist, Forester, Biologist, Engineer, Hydrogeologist) with ability to sign-off in Alberta.
Position Requirements:
The suitable candidate for this position will require a diverse skill set in both the field and office components of environmental consulting. This includes a strong understanding of the consulting industry.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience with:
- Ground disturbance supervision
- Reclamation earthworks supervision
- Detailed site assessments
- Pre-reclamation assessments
- Technical report writing
- In-depth understanding of the Alberta reclamation criteria and Record of Observation form
As well as the following skills and qualifications:
- Soil identification skills, including the ability to describe and classify soils in the field
- Vegetation identification skills
- Groundwater monitoring experience, including sampling, data interpretation and reporting
- Ability to work independently while managing field and office responsibilities
- A dedication to quality, accountability, and collaboration
- Strong understanding of environmental regulations and industry best practices
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
- Ability and willingness to conduct field work in varying weather and site conditions
- Desire to mentor and train junior staff
- Self-starter who has strong ability to set goals and achieve those goals; work independently and possesses a willingness to learn
- Possess creative problem-solving skills with a strong ability to assess and resolve problems or challenges as they arise and implement timely solutions
- Experience in preparing and adhering to site-specific health and safety plans
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite of services
Working Conditions:
- Office-based (40%), with fieldwork (60%) in diverse environmental conditions and remote locations.
- Field work includes:
- • Travel required within BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan; Alberta Class 5 driver’s license required.
- Evenings and weekends as required.
- Regular use of PPE or safety attire.
- Commonly traversing various landscapes; standing or crouching for extended periods of time.
- Training is provided for safe handling of toxic materials and hazardous equipment, situations and conditions.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
