The sector leads complex, high‑profile priorities and provides integrated analysis, advice, and solutions to address emerging issues, ensuring alignment with government priorities and effective decision‑making.   For more information about the Ministry of Advanced Education, please visit: https://www.alberta.ca/education-and-childcare Role Responsibilities Reporting to the Strategic Advisor, the Writer-Editor has a critical role in ensuring the strategic efforts of the sector are focused and aligned internally and externally. As a member of the Finance, Governance, and Capital Policy sector team, the position develops responses to strategically relevant issues and plans and manages the sector’s strategic information program.      The Writer-Editor Role actions the responsibilities as listed below:  

Develop and deliver strategic written communications, including briefing notes, key messages, and presentations Manage and coordinate Action Requests (ARs) to ensure timely, accurate, and aligned responses Monitor emerging issues, trends, and external environments to support proactive issue management Provide strategic advice on risks, impacts, and communications positioning to leadership Liaise with the ADM office, stakeholders, and subject matter experts to coordinate responses Draft and review correspondence for executive, ministerial, and public audiences Ensure all communications are clear, consistent, and compliant with legislation and policies Analyze complex issues and develop integrated responses for sensitive or high‑profile matters Track deliverables and manage workflows to meet tight deadlines and competing priorities Build and maintain strong relationships to support information sharing and collaboration Support executive decision‑making through high‑quality analysis and recommendations Oversee quality control of briefing materials and ensure alignment with government priorities Identify opportunities to improve communication processes and information management practices Support coordination of sector operations and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives

Qualifications University graduation in English, Journalism, Professional Writing for a related field with no experience required; or equivalent as described below.    Equivalency:     Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:     1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or  1 year of experience for 1 year of education.   Required: 

Strong critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to analyze complex, multifaceted issues and develop effective solutions Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey complex information clearly, concisely, and in plain language Advanced writing and editing skills for preparing briefings, memos, and correspondence for diverse audiences Strong organizational and time‑management skills to manage multiple priorities, competing demands, and tight deadlines Ability to synthesize complex and diverse information into clear, actionable insights Strong interpersonal, relationship‑building, and collaboration skills to work effectively with diverse stakeholders Excellent research and analytical skills to validate information and monitor trends, risks, and emerging issues High attention to detail and accuracy in all deliverables Strong coordination, negotiation, and problem‑solving skills to manage information requests and timelines effectively Ability to identify, mobilize, and coordinate resources to meet deadlines and address issues Awareness of politically sensitive environments and the ability to assess impacts on decision‑making Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and experience with ARTS or similar systems

  Assets: 

Experience applying Government of Alberta style guidelines for briefings and correspondence Understanding of government structures, decision making processes, and political environment Knowledge of ministry/division programs, priorities, and business processes Familiarity with relevant legislation, regulations, and policy frameworks Knowledge of Alberta’s education system and fiscal planning processes Experience with business planning, performance measurement, and quality assurance practices Ability to anticipate emerging issues and assess impacts within complex policy and stakeholder environments
