Manager, Employee and Labour Relations
About the role
This is a Temporary contract position for up to Eighteen (18) months
At Sinai Health, we care, create possibilities and offer hope. We are looking for an experienced Human Resources Manager, Employee and Labour Relations to join our team.
In this role you will:
Support the Sinai Health Leadership Group
- Support the Sinai Health leadership group with employee and labour relations matters and provides informed, strategic and timely advice, support, and counsel
- Develop recommendations to proactively address issues and concerns
- Manage special projects including conducting research, consulting with clients/stakeholders, facilitating group discussions and preparing recommendations for change; projects will span the areas of employee and labour relations, training & development, workforce planning and other human resource functions
- Actively contribute to Sinai Health’s strategic goal of putting quality and safety first to foster an environment of continuous quality improvement
Lead the Implementation of Sinai Health Human Resources Processes
- Work as a member of the Sinai Health HR team to ensure consistent and integrated employee and labour relations practices across the system as appropriate
- Provide leadership and expertise in areas including workplace conflict, employee conduct, performance management, progressive discipline, termination, attendance support, contingency planning, etc.
- Advise managers in the interpretation and implementation of local and central collective agreements, employment legislation, and HR best practice
- Respond to and investigate grievance matters/breaches including fact finding, preparing positions, acting as representative, using legal resources effectively, attending hearings and providing counsel to witnesses
- Support manager in addressing complex employee and labour relations issues, while fostering positive working relationships between management and labour partners; liaises with union leadership and is an advocate for positive relations
- Negotiate resolutions/settlements, implements resolutions and communicates effectively with stakeholders
- Partner with legal counsel on matters proceeding to arbitration
- Research and analyze trends/data impacting employee and labour relations, recommend appropriate strategies
- Build relationships with external stakeholders (e.g. peer institutions, universities and colleges) to keep pace with emerging market trends; participate in related committees and outreach programs as required
- Work with the Occupational Health, Safety, Human Resources, and Diversity, Wellness and Inclusion departments and Sinai Health leadership to ensure a healthy and safe work environment for all staff and identify appropriate temporary modified work and/or permanent accommodation solutions
HR Policy Development & Implementation
- Interpret and apply legislation, collective agreements and Sinai Health policies; consulting with key stakeholders as necessary
- Liaise with external organizations and legal counsel as appropriate
- Ensure policies and procedures are current and relevant based on developments in legislation and best practice
- Liaise with Sinai Health teams and committees, external partners/clients, other hospitals and government officials to develop opportunities to exchange information, gather knowledge and adapt plans accordingly
- Perform other duties consistent with the job classification as required

Mandatory

Successful completion of a University degree in a related field from an accredited educational institution

5 years of experience in HR and several functional areas

Experience in a large, complex institution

Significant knowledge and experience managing employee and labour relations issues with the demonstrated ability to foster positive working relationships between management and union groups

Applicants with proven equivalent and related training and experience may also be considered
Preferred

Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP)/ Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL)

Experience in a large, complex healthcare organization
Skills and Knowledge

Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, interpret and administer HR policies involving a variety of situations

Comprehensive knowledge of relevant legislation, e.g. Ontario Human Rights Code, Employment Standards Act, Labour Relations Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act, etc.

Knowledgeable about current best practices and trends including performance management, attendance support, accommodation, and modified work programs

Proficient with MS Office software programs (e.g. Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.) as well as Human Resources Information Systems
