Oriole Landscaping is a mid-town Toronto design/build firm that focuses on high-end residential installations. Oriole has been working diligently for over 39 years in the industry and continues to refine its business culture, landscape construction and horticultural maintenance processes.

Job Summary

The Controller analyzes Oriole’s financial information and prepares financial reports by compiling information, preparing balance sheets and profit & loss statements, and utilizing appropriate accounting control procedures. The person is responsible for maintaining receivables, payables, and Government remittances. This is an internal accounting role within our private company. A professional accounting designation (CPA) is not required, as the position does not involve public accounting or regulated assurance services.

Job Duties:

o Record, monitor, and analyze financial transactions to ensure compliance with accounting standards and company policies.

o Prepare internal financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow) and provide supporting analysis for management decision-making.

o Develop and maintain accounting systems, controls, and procedures to improve efficiency and accuracy.

o Analyze budgets and expenditures, monitor actual vs. budget performance, and prepare variance explanations with recommendations.

o Forecast short- and long-term cash flow requirements and prepare liquidity reports.

o Review and reconcile general ledger and subsidiary accounts (bank, receivables, payables, fixed assets, etc.) to ensure accuracy and completeness.

o Prepare and post month-end journal entries, including accruals, provisions, and depreciation.

o Prepare compliance-related reports, including tax filings and statutory remittances.

o Administer payroll, ensuring accurate calculation of wages, overtime, vacation entitlements, and deductions in compliance with employment standards.

o Ensure timely processing and release of employee payments, and prepare related government remittances and year-end reports.

o Liaise with external service providers, government agencies, and consultants on accounting, payroll, and compliance matters.

o Supervise and train junior accounting staff or administrative personnel in accounting systems and reporting procedures.

o Provide recommendations on cost-control measures, financial planning, and process improvements.

o May perform other duties as needed.

Education, Work Experience and Skills Requirements:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field, required

• Must have a minimum of 3+ years of work experience in accounting or a closely related role

• Strong proficiency with accounting software and MS Office (QuickBooks, Excel) required

• Solid knowledge of Canadian accounting processes and procedures

• Strong oral and written English communication skills
