Job Description

The City of Merritt is seeking certified Lifeguards who will be responsible for ensuring the safety and enjoyment of participants in aquatic activities. As a Lifeguard Instructor I, you will provide lifeguarding for the Nicola Valley Aquatic Center and respond to emergencies and other situations as they arise. You will teach and evaluate lessons for children, youth and adults, assist in planning and delivering special events and perform routine cleaning and maintenance of the aquatic center, its amenities and equipment.

Casual employees are scheduled on an as-needed basis to relieve employees who are on leaves, vacation, or during peak work periods for overload situations; there are no regularly scheduled hours or guarantee of hours.

Key Responsibilities

  • Performs lifeguard duties in an alert and conscientious manner ensuring the safety of patrons using the facility. Observe and supervise swimming areas at the Nicola Valley Aquatic Centre and ensure that patrons and participants are acting in accordance with facility rules.

  • Responds to emergency situations in accordance with established procedures and training by rescuing bathers in distress, administering first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and/or other emergency response as required by the situation.

  • Performs routine checks to ensure the facility equipment are in safe, working condition including but not limited to instructional, leisure, first aid, and rescue equipment.

  • Provides professional & courteous customer service to patrons. Ensures patron safety and enjoyment of the facility be enforcing established facility rules and policies in a positive manner.

  • Teaches, instructs, and evaluates a variety of aquatic and recreation activities or programs such as water safety, swim lessons, lifesaving, and babysitting.

  • Prepares and maintains a variety of records related to the work.

  • Provides relief for front office including accepting admissions, preparing and selling concession items, cashier, answering telephones, and other similar duties.

  • Conducts routine maintenance of the aquatic centre and amenities by cleaning and disinfecting areas such as counters, bathrooms, lockers, surfaces, etc to ensure that the facility is in a safe and comfortable condition for patrons.

  • Performs routine water chemistry duties and cleans, monitors, and adjusts water treatment equipment as required.

  • Assists in the planning and coordinating of a variety of special events and programs.

  • Participates in regular in-service training.

  • Other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • All required qualifications must be, where applicable, registered with the respective authority and maintained current and in good standing:
  • National Lifeguard Service (Pool Option) Certification
  • Swim Instructor
  • Standard First Aid
  • CPR certification – Level ‘C’ with AED Certification
  • Experience providing lifeguarding or equivalent services
  • Ability to communicate and deal with others with courtesy, tact, and diplomacy.

New hires and those working in designated positions of trust, including those working directly with vulnerable persons, will be required to provide a satisfactory Police Information Check as a condition of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

Lifesaving Instructor Certification, Life Saving Society Instructor/Trainer, Pool Operations Level I and II
