Qualifications:
Essential
- Completion of a recognized legal assistant training program, or equivalent experience as an administrative or executive assistant in a court or legal-related environment
- Excellent verbal communication skills
- Excellent written communication skills
- Excellent proofreading and editing skills with an understanding of the proper case, statute and neutral citation standards
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to deal effectively with the legal profession, the general public and other stakeholders
- Proven organizational and time management skills with the ability to meet multiple workload demands and strict deadlines
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment skills to make independent decisions
- Ability to work in a team environment as well as contribute to a respectful workplace.
- Demonstrated ability to support multiple senior leaders simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
Desired
- Experience using legal research applications such as Quicklaw/Lexis Nexis and CanLII and conducting related internet searches
- Knowledge of the Court systems, Court rules, policies and procedures
- Experience with transcription from digital/oral dictation
Duties:
The Judicial Assistant provides administrative support services to Judges of the Court of King's Bench of Manitoba as assigned. Key duties include: preparing instructions to the jury and jury charges, processing the judgments of the court including proofreading and researching legal texts for references to citations and quotations, maintaining filing systems and responding to inquiries from various stakeholders. The incumbent will also coordinate meetings and make travel arrangements, prepare expense claims, assist the judiciary, court staff, government departments, legal profession and the public in a professional manner while applying the appropriate level of discretion. The incumbent works primarily independently and with minimum supervision, but also works with a team of colleagues who support one another.
