About the Job
Fresh Market Foods is seeking a Grocery Manager who provides strong leadership, drives team performance, and ensures the grocery department operates efficiently and to the highest standards. This role is ideal for someone who leads by example, builds engaged and accountable teams, and maintains a well-organized, customer-focused department. You will play a key role in planning, coordinating, and supporting daily operations in a fast-paced environment where adaptability and sound decision-making are essential.
Responsibilities:
- Supervise, train, schedule, and support staff, ensuring each team member understands their responsibilities and is equipped to achieve individual and departmental goals. Conduct performance reviews, provide coaching, recognize accomplishments, and address performance issues constructively.
- Oversee daily grocery operations, ensuring smooth workflow, operational efficiency, and high productivity. Anticipate challenges and implement proactive solutions to maintain performance and service standards.
- Maintain accurate inventory and pricing controls, including stock rotation, cost changes, retail and promotional pricing, and price file accuracy. Complete annual warehouse inventory counts and ensure all products are properly labelled, priced, stored, and compliant with company standards.
- Drive departmental performance, sales, and profitability by contributing to planning and goal-setting, tracking sales, gross profit, margins, shrink, and other operational metrics. Execute merchandising strategies, plan promotions and end displays, introduce new products, and ensure weekly grocery advertisements and flyer pricing are accurate, timely, and effectively promoted. Identify variances and implement corrective actions to protect profitability and maintain competitive pricing.
- Foster a culture of health and safety, ensuring staff compliance with WHMIS, Fresh Market Foods policies, and applicable Canadian health and safety legislation. Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and ensure safety protocols are consistently followed.
- Ensure excellent customer service by addressing inquiries, resolving complaints, providing recommendations, and supporting staff in delivering friendly, professional service both in person and over the phone.
- Utilize Dayforce and technology tools for scheduling, time and attendance, payroll accuracy, and administrative tasks. Train and support staff in Dayforce and Dayforce Wallet, and use Microsoft Office and collaboration tools to manage communication, reporting, and operations effectively.
- Maintain department processes and controls, including cleaning schedules, sweep logs, pricing accuracy, and policy compliance. Identify opportunities for continuous improvement, waste reduction, and operational efficiency.
- Collaborate with other department managers and leadership to support store objectives, providing guidance and operational support to Grocery Clerks, Supervisors, and Assistant Managers to ensure seamless daily operations.
- Develop and mentor team members, fostering a positive, accountable work environment that supports skill development, succession planning, and career advancement within the grocery department.
Qualifications and Skills:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; post-secondary education in business, retail management, or a related field is an asset.
- Minimum 2–3 years of management experience in a grocery, retail, or foodservice environment, including supervising teams and overseeing daily operations. Experience managing multiple departments or a large team is considered an asset.
- Strong leadership and team management experience in a grocery or retail environment.
- Experience with inventory management, pricing, and maintaining gross profit targets.
- Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment.
- Forklift certification, Smart Serve certification, and/or Safe Food Handling certification are considered an asset.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, including weekends and holidays.
Terms of Employment: Permanent Full-time (40 hours/week)
Positions: 1
Wage/Salary: Starting at $28.00 – $32.00 per/hour (depending on experience)
Closing Date: January 31, 2026

Transportation Assistance: Fresh Market Foods will provide a one-time round-trip travel reimbursement for the successful candidate from their permanent residence to our workplace at the start of employment, and back to their permanent residence at the end of the work period. This reimbursement is limited to personal travel only and does not cover transportation of household goods, trailers, or other large personal belongings.
