About the role
As the Lead Navigation and Communications Commissioning Engineer you will support the various stages of the Polar Max project at client sites located in Helsinki, Finland, and Lévis, Québec. This role is responsible for managing and executing the commissioning of navigation and communication systems on vessels, offshore platforms, and industrial facilities. The ideal candidate will have a solid background in maritime and naval communications and navigation electronics, as well as strong leadership skills to oversee system integration, testing, troubleshooting, and final handover. More specifically, you will:
- Support the Commissioning Department in developing vessel-specific commissioning documentation, task-specific risk analyses, permits to work, and livening up notices.
- Organize and set up test configurations, ensuring all required equipment is onsite and available in accordance with test plans and standards.
- Lead and coordinate the navigation and communication aspects of commissioning and testing/trials, including pre-commissioning, commissioning, dock and sea trials, according to the written procedures, while ensuring progress is reported.
- Present operational commissioned navigation and communication systems to classification societies and client for witness testing and acceptance.
- Obtain all required signatures from classification societies and client to complete commissioning documentation and formal closeout.
- Adhere to all in-house health, safety, and environment (HSE) policies at all times.
- Lead and coordinate the commissioning of navigation and communication systems, including but not limited to:
- Radar
- ECDIS
- AIS
- VHF/UHF radios
- GMDSS
- GPD/INS
- Satellite communication systems
- Hydrographic packages
- Develop and execute commissioning plans, procedures, and checklists.
- Attend Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), Site Acceptance Tests (SATs), and Harbour/Hook-up Acceptance Tests (HATs) when required.
- Interface with vendors, subcontractors, shipyards, and client representatives.
- Identify and resolve technical issues during installation and commissioning.
- Prepare and submit detailed commissioning documentation reports.
- Ensure compliance with safety procedures and quality standards throughout commissioning activities.
- Provide technical support during project handover and start-up phases.
Requirements
- Navigation and Communications Engineer with sea-going or offshore experience. A bachelor’s degree in Electronics, Telecommunications, Marine Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
- Minimum of 10 of relevant experience.
- Availability for regular travel to Helsinki Shipyard in Finland, from 2026 to early 2028.
- Proven experience with a variety of automation systems across different vessel types.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word and Excel specifically.
- Strong technical knowledge of maritime navigation and communication systems.
- Familiarity with industry regulations and classification society requirements.
- Excellent troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
- Strong communication and leadership abilities.
- Must undergo and successfully complete the investigation and security clearance process required by the federal government’s Contract Security Program, as well as meet the requirements of the Controlled Goods Program (CGP) and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
