About the role

We are looking for an experienced Driver to join our team at the Calgary Food Bank - where every kilometre you drive helps power a purpose. As a Driver, you’re at the heart of our operation, ensuring safe, timely and reliable transport every day.

Last year, the 13 vehicles in our fleet travelled 274, 200 km- that’s around the world almost 4 times! By establishing and maintaining good working relationships with suppliers and donors, our Drivers play a key role in providing quality, nutritious food to clients and community partners.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establishing and maintaining good working relationships with suppliers and donors of all kinds.
  • Representing the Food Bank in public and maintaining the public image of efficiency, courtesy, and professionalism at all times when on duty.
  • Evaluating donations for quality before accepting them.
  • Maintenance and cleanliness of vehicle.
  • Ensuring that all scheduled pickups and deliveries are completed in a timely manner.
  • Driving safely and courteously at all times.
  • Accountability for the confidentially of all Food Bank business and client data/information that may be acquired through work at the CIFB.
  • Ensure safe food handling procedures are followed.
  • Safe and proper use of equipment.
  • Following all Health and Safety procedures, including completing any training that is required.
  • Participate in ensuring ongoing cleanliness of the CFB facility.
  • Any other duties that may be required in the warehouse as time permits.

Tasks Performed:

  • Notifying the Shift Supervisor if any unavoidable circumstances prevent the completion of pickups and deliveries on time as scheduled.
  • Proper recording of donations, ensuring paperwork is properly filled out before shift end. Handling cash donations.
  • Proper, safe loading and unloading of the truck.
  • Driver’s Daily Checklist to be filled out before leaving warehouse before each shift.
  • Performing minor preventative maintenance on trucks (i.e., check oil, maintain DEF fluid).
  • Ensuring that the truck box and cab are cleaned, and the truck is fuelled and properly prepared for the next shift.
  • Ensuring that store donation boxes are clean and in good condition and that all donation boxes leaving the building are in good condition.
  • Recording the temperatures of perishables, ensuring that the reefer is in good working condition, recording the reefer temperature and the unloading time, and report any issues.
  • Delivery of hampers to depot locations as required and ensuring pickup of crates as agreed.
  • Working in the warehouse as required by the Logistics and Inventory Manager.
  • Performing other tasks as required by the Transportation Supervisor.

Decision Making & Leadership Capabilities:

  • Must be able to make appropriate decisions in a fast-paced environment, maintain work schedules with little supervision and have flexibility required to perform the job functions in accordance with the Food Bank policies and procedures at all times.
  • Provides positive support and leadership to all volunteers. Providing positive support, information and leadership to all volunteers and casual drivers.
  • Maintain positive relationships with donors, to build strong relationships and increase donor impact.

Education & Experience Required:

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience driving a 5-ton required.
  • Experience working with a wide variety of people or in a customer service capacity.
  • Forklift experience and previous food handling course an asset.
  • Mechanical inclination an asset.
  • Clear Driver’s Abstract
  • Air Brake endorsement is an asset.

Skills & Capabilities:

  • Good knowledge of the city.
  • Must haveexcellent interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with a wide variety of people.
  • Well established organizational skills.

Working Conditions

Working conditions are normal for a warehouse and driving environment. Requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. repetitively and a high energy level. This is a full-time, 37.5 hours per week. You may be required to work certain evenings and weekends, but whenever possible advance notice will be given.
