We are seeking an experienced and motivated Associate Lawyer to join our Calgary office and become part of our nationally recognized Indigenous and Government Relations Practice Group.
This position offers an exceptional opportunity for a senior associate to work with First Nations, Tribal Councils, Indigenous organizations and government entities on complex governance, specific claims, employment, regulatory, commercial litigation and Indigenous law matters. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to assume a leadership role within a growing practice and participate in significant client development initiatives, with a clear path toward long-term career advancement.
Qualifications Minimum five (5) years of post-call legal experience Significant experience appearing before the Federal Court of Canada and administrative tribunals Demonstrated experience advising Indigenous governments and organizations on governance matters Experience with Indigenous law, including governance, elections, membership, consultation, treaty rights and related matters Experience advising and representing First Nations in specific claims, treaty entitlement matters, historical grievances and negotiations with Canada Strong commercial litigation experience, including complex disputes, injunctions, judicial reviews and contractual matters Extensive experience in employment and labour law, including workplace investigations, terminations, human rights, disability management and policy development Excellent legal research, writing, advocacy and negotiation skills Proven ability to manage complex files independently while working collaboratively within a team environment Membership in good standing with a Canadian law society or eligibility for admission in Alberta
Responsibilities Advise First Nations, Tribal Councils and Indigenous organizations on governance, constitutional, regulatory and operational matters Represent clients before the Federal Court of Canada, Federal Court of Appeal, administrative tribunals and other courts as required Advise and assist clients regarding specific claims, treaty-related matters, negotiations with Canada and historical claims processes Conduct commercial litigation matters, including contractual disputes, judicial reviews, injunctions and other complex proceedings Provide strategic advice on employment, labour, human rights, privacy and workplace matters Draft governance legislation, policies, bylaws, codes, employment agreements and related legal documents Conduct legal research and prepare opinions, submissions, pleadings and advocacy materials Develop and maintain strong client relationships while contributing to business development initiatives
