Job Description Classification by HEU: Janitor, Cleaner - 10 Sunset Lodge, Local Commitment Statement “Sunset Lodge is a home that provides person-centered care in our community, guided by Christ and rooted in love.”
Job Purpose The Janitor performs a variety of custodial duties and minor maintenance repairs necessary to keep the facility in a clean and orderly condition which contributes to the efficient daily operations.
Characteristic Job Duties The incumbent is responsible for the following range of job duties characteristic, or typical of the job class:
- Vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, stripping, and waxing of flooring.
- High/low dusting of common areas, stairs, chapel, and activities room
- Clean and sanitize public and staff bathrooms.
- Clean sinks, countertops, microwaves, and refrigerators in break rooms
- Restock supplies in bathrooms, break rooms and common areas.
- Empty all trash cans and replace liners, clean receptacles as necessary.
- Empty all recycle bins and separate into appropriate bins.
- Stock and replace water coolers.
- Cleaning windowsills and windows in designated areas
- Maintain janitorial area in a clean, organized, and safe manner.
- Ability to function and maintain janitorial equipment in a clean, safe, and operable condition.
- Proper labeling, dilution, and use of all chemicals
- Always wearing proper Personal Protective Equipment
- General maintenance of grounds, including parkade
- Notify Facility Service Manager or Maintenance Department concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems.
- Remove snow from sidewalks and spread snow melting chemicals.
- Set up, arrange, and remove decorations, tables, chairs, to prepare facilities for events such as banquets and meetings.
- Hang paintings and photos.
- Receives delivery and re-stocks housekeeping and nursing storage areas with supplies.
- Checks Maintenance Portal and addresses relatable issues in a timely and safe manner, updates system as needed.
- Records and notifies FSM of depleting supplies.
- Responsible for minor repairs in electrical and plumbing
- Other routine maintenance duties as assigned.
NOTE: Not all incumbents perform all of the duties described above but perform a similar range of duties.
Minimum Education Level Attained The successful job applicant will have completed High School
NOTE: An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable.
Special Licenses, Diplomas, Certifications Or Requirements The successful applicant will hold/have:
- WHMIS
- Basic Plumbing and Electrical knowledge
Minimum Prior Related Experience The incumbent must have the following experience before hire:
- Minimum 3 years janitorial and handy man experience a must in similar type facility.
- Previous experience in healthcare environment preferred.
Physical Effort/Dexterity Required
- Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permits the employee to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person.
- Sufficient manual dexterity that permits the employee to operate equipment.
- Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, which permits the employee to work in an outdoor environment in a variety of weather conditions and in confined spaces.
- Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines, public contact, and changing priorities and conditions.
- The incumbent is required to lift upwards of 50lbs.
Concentration Required
- The performance of the job requires attention to detail.
- Awareness of surroundings and adheres to safety first protocol.
- Awareness and ability to adapt to an unpredictable environment and vulnerable population
Work Environment The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:
- Noisy
- Exposure to odors
- Dealing with aggressive/agitated behaviors
- Crowded in some cases.
- Pressures of timeline
Exposure To Hazards The incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor to moderate injury or illnesses due to:
- Physical attacks by others (verbal)
- Exposure to toxic chemicals
- Moving objects
- Electrical hazards
- Injury from lifting
- Falling on wet/slippery floors
- Other potentially dangerous situations
Precautionary Measures The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules):
- Universal Precautions
- Vaccination against Tuberculosis
Compensation The target hiring range for this position is $24.34 to $24.34 with a maximum of $24.34.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
