What You Will Get To Do

Reporting to the Supervisor of Aquatics , the Instructor Guard is responsible for ensuring a safe, welcoming, and engaging aquatic environment while delivering high-quality instruction in accordance with Lifesaving Society programs and standards.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Aquatic Safety & Supervision

  • Actively patrolling the pool deck and scanning the water to ensure patron safety;
  • Recognize and respond to emergency situations, including rescues in accordance with National Lifeguard Service (NLS) standards;
  • Enforce pool rules, resolve concerns, and provide public education as required;

Instruction & Program Delivery

  • Deliver Lifesaving Society Swim programs in a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable learning environment;
  • Provide instruction primarily in-water, with some dryland teaching as required;
  • Respond professionally and promptly to participant and parent/guardian inquiries;
  • Prepare and submit detailed lesson plans weekly ;
  • Complete, proof, and submit participant progress reports at the end of the session for all participants;
  • Provides timely and professional responses to all inquiries and directives from Supervisors and the Pool Coordinator; and
  • Maintains up-to-date class worksheets by completing them promptly after each shift.

Professional Standards & Operations

  • Set up and clear the pool deck before and after shifts, ensuring equipment is properly stored;
  • Assists with setting up and removing lane ropes as required for programming;
  • Maintains a clean and organized equipment room and guard office;
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings and training sessions;
  • Maintain all required certifications and personal fitness to NLS standards; and
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

You communicate effectively, build positive relationships, and understand the responsibility associated with supervising and instructing in an aquatic environment.

You will have well-developed interpersonal and relationship building skills with the ability to establish rapport, work cooperatively and communicate effectively with staff, children, youth, parents/guardians and community partners. who understands the level of responsibility this position brings.

What You Bring To Our Team

You must possess and maintain the following current certifications throughout employment:

  • Lifesaving Society’s National Lifeguard (Pool) Certification
  • Lifesaving Society’s Swim Instructor Certification
  • Lifesaving Society’s Lifesaving Instructor Certification
  • Lifesaving Society’s Emergency First Aid Instructor Certification
  • Standard First Aid and CPR “C”
  • A valid, satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Record Check

Selection Process:

  1. The selection process will include both written and practical in-pool assessments.

  2. Candidates must be available to attend the in-pool assessment to be considered for a position. Only those selected to participate in the assessment will be contacted.

  3. Candidates will be required to provide proof of current certifications at the in-pool assessment. Those failing to provide such proof will be disqualified immediately from the process.

  4. Candidates offered a position will be required to attend mandatory training sessions as scheduled, exceptions will not be granted.
