Nestled on the eastern shores of spectacular Vancouver Island the Town of Ladysmith has a population of approximately 9,000 people, provides an inviting small town atmosphere and yet, is only a short commute to all the amenities of a major urban centre.

Position Overview:
Reporting to the Programmer, Recreation & Culture, the Junior Leader assists in providing summer day camp / playground opportunities for children and will directly lead and supervise the activities.

Qualifications:

  • Possess high energy level, enthusiasm, empathy and genuine interest in working with children.

  • Demonstrated ability to safely and effectively supervise children.

  • Knowledge of age appropriate activities.

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment.

  • Knowledge of behaviour management.

  • Outdoor skills will be an asset.

  • An open-minded convener of ideas.

  • Stamina, energy, and willingness to commit to quality pro-active results.

  • Valid standard first aid certification including CPR-C.

  • Demonstrated initiative without supervision or specific direction; completing tasks by removing barriers and locating necessary resources.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in a wide variety of situations applying diplomacy and interpersonal skill to establish and maintain productive relationships.

  • Demonstrated high level of focus on internal and external client service continuously seeking ways to meet and exceed client expectations.

  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively within a team and with Town employees, stakeholders and partners to achieve optimal results.

  • Demonstrates valuing diversity.

Additional Information:

  • Employees currently receive Wellness Initiatives, including use of facilities at Frank Jameson Community Center

  • Hours of work: 17.5 hours/week – June 20, 2026 – August 25, 2026

    • Parks, Recreation and Culture is a seven-day per week operation and may require employees to be available for work weekdays, evenings and weekends.
  • Status: Temporary Part Time

  • Wage rate: $17.85 per hour (2025 rate)

  • Benefits: As per the Collective Agreement (Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 401

Conditions of Employment:

  • Automatic wage deposit

  • Applicant must provide proof o legal eligibility to work in Canada
