About the role

Overview

Participates as a member of the Transmission Distribution Operations division and performs Journeyperson level work in the construction and maintenance of electrical transmission and distribution systems, including substations underground and streetlight systems. This position is based out of Hay River , however routine work area encompasses all communities in the South Slave and Taltson Hydro site. May be assigned to support any of NTPC’s service areas including the Beaufort Delta, Dehcho / Sahtu, North/South Slave, hydro sites and remote transmission lines.

Please note this is NOT a fly-in/rotational position - it does require the successful candidate to relocate to/live in Hay River, and must be willing & able to travel throughout the regions.

Responsibilities

  • Always work safely, adhere to all aspects of the NTPC Health & Safety and Environmental programs, comply with all rules & regulations, and continually practice health & safety while performing any duties.
  • Restores transmission and distribution systems when there is a power disturbance failure, or storm damage by locating the source of the problem, replacing and/or repairing defective power lines and accessories.
  • Completes pole and conductor replacement on distribution Transmission systems throughout the NWT Power Corporation. [120v to 115KV]
  • Constructs single phase and three phase transmission and distribution lines (5KV to 115KV). Includes installation of three phase transformer banks.
  • Performs routine line and substation maintenance and inspections
  • Performs hot stick work on 5 kV to 115 kV lines from wood and steel structures. Uses hot-line and live-line maintenance techniques and procedures for 5KV – 115KV.
  • Works with and assists other trades and contractors and provides guidance and training to apprentice power linepersons, casuals and/or helpers as required.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Certification as a Journeyperson Power Lineperson (must provide proof during screening), with an Interprovincial Red Seal Journeyperson Power Lineperson Certification preferred, and a minimum of one (1) year of directly related experience in the installation and maintenance of power distribution line systems required. Equivalencies may be considered.
  • MUST HAVE a Class 3 driver’s license WITH air brake endorsement (must provide proof during screening).
  • Knowledge & the ability to assist in the use of specialized equipment and be familiar with test procedures on power transformers, breakers, metering tanks, high voltage cables and switches, voltage regulators (i.e. ratio tests, capacitance/dissipation factor testing, DC HYPOT testing).
  • Ability to read and work off blueprints, as well as interpret drawings, diagrams, and specifications of a variety of types of electrical equipment, including manufacturer’s manuals and parts books.
  • Team player with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Good planning, organizational and communications skills.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certification.
  • Must be willing & able to travel throughout the regions.
  • Must provide a satisfactory criminal record check.
  • Must provide two supervisor references.

Salary for this position ranges from $50.05/hr - $60.81/hr, plus location allowance of approximately $3,823 per annum and a comprehensive benefits package, which includes Health and Dental Benefits, Life Insurance, paid Sick Days and a Defined Pension Plan. Relocation assistance may be provided. Please note this is NOT a fly-in/rotational position - it does require the successful candidate to relocate to/live in Hay River, NT, and must be willing & able to travel throughout the regions**.**
