Job Information

Housing NWT invites applications for the position of Facilities Maintainer.

Located in Yellowknife, the Facilities Maintainer reports to the Manager, Maintenance Programs and is the go-to person for keeping Housing NWT (HNWT) facilities up and running. This is a boots-on-the-ground role-keeping buildings, equipment, and grounds in good working order, no matter what the day brings. Something breaks, you fix it. Something's off, you track it down. From routine maintenance to unexpected issues, you help make sure facilities are safe, reliable, and ready when people need them.

Supporting Service Delivery Organizations (SDOs), the Facilities Maintainer plays a key role in keeping spaces functional-especially in shelter environments supporting underhoused residents, where there's no such thing as "we'll get to it later." You work alongside internal teams and community partners to keep things moving and get the job done right the first time.

All work is carried out within the legislative and policy framework of the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT), following the standards, codes, and safety practices that keep everyone protected.

Key Responsibilities

  • Keep building systems running safely and reliably, including heating, ventilation, and other environmental controls.
  • Troubleshoot and repair equipment, building systems, and structures-getting things back up and running quickly and properly.
  • Carry out routine inspections and preventative maintenance to catch issues early and avoid bigger problems down the line.
  • Step in during emergencies (fire alarms, power outages, system failures) and respond according to established procedures.
  • Monitor and maintain biomass heating systems to keep them running efficiently.
  • Handle minor renovations, repairs, and cosmetic fixes-whatever's needed to keep spaces functional and in good shape.
  • Support day-to-day operations like moves, waste management, and grounds upkeep.
  • Help track and report on maintenance work, utilities, and overall facility performance.
  • Assist with vehicle fleet upkeep and coordination as needed.

Key Qualifications

  • Journeyman Certificate in a mechanical trade, or completion of a recognized technical program (e.g., Building Maintenance Certificate or similar).
  • At least two (2) years of hands-on building maintenance experience.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License with a satisfactory driver's abstract.

Equivalencies:

  • Six (6) to seven (7) years of directly related, hands-on experience in building maintenance.
  • Other combinations of education and experience will be considered.

Working Conditions

  • Work takes place indoors and outdoors, including mechanical rooms, maintenance areas, and active facility sites.
  • You'll be working in northern conditions-cold winters, variable weather, and everything that comes with it.
  • The job is physical: lifting, carrying, climbing ladders, bending, and working with tools and equipment are part of the day-to-day.
  • Exposure to typical maintenance hazards, including noise, dust, chemicals, and mechanical or electrical systems.
  • On-call and after-hours work may be required to deal with emergencies or urgent repairs.
  • Some travel within the community or to other locations may be required.

The Government of the Northwest Territories offers a competitive salary, annual Northern Living Allowance, and a comprehensive benefits package, including a defined benefit pension plan, health and dental coverage, and relocation assistance, where applicable.
