Environmental Technician/Technologist

Stantec is looking for the newest members of our environmental services team in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia to specifically support hazardous building materials assessments and abatement, indoor air quality assessments, and industrial hygiene programs. Support may also be required for Phase I, II, and III Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs), multimedia sampling programs, remediation programs, and environmental spill response.

In this role, you will work as part of our environmental services team in the development and delivery of environmental studies for a variety of resource, infrastructure and development projects in our local community and across the country. You will be part of a team that includes national experts who will mentor you closely as you grow your skills and career while working on a diverse collection of projects.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Perform and document field data collection activities (including oversight of subcontractors); assist in the completion of project level work (data management, report preparation)
- Complete site inspections for Phase I Environmental Site Assessments
- Complete hazardous building materials assessments for designated substances including asbestos, lead, PCBs, mercury, ozone-depleting substances, and mould.
- Complete hazardous material abatement/remediation assessments and air monitoring.
- Conduct multi-media sampling (soil, groundwater, surface water, sediment, soil gas, indoor air, etc.)
- Provide oversight of subcontractors including drillers, utility locators, etc., including overseeing advancement of soil and rock borings, installation of groundwater monitoring wells, soil excavation projects
- Completion of fieldwork, including installation of groundwater monitoring wells, groundwater monitoring and sampling, soil characterization and sampling, and soil vapour/indoor air sampling
- Prepare soil boring logs and well construction details
- Complete aquifer testing, water level measurements, and elevation surveying
- Coordinate with laboratories, clients, subcontractors, third-party stakeholders
- Demonstrate ability to analyze field and technical data, and draft technical reports following established standards, policies, procedures, and guidelines to complete assignments
- Conduct desktop project-related research (e.g., historic data, regulations, literature reviews)
- Where necessary, work independently, connecting with senior personnel as required for clarity and guidance
- Support the development of proposals and participate in other business development activities
- Complete applicable company and client required health & safety training and follow health &safety policies and procedures
Qualifications - External Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Able to work effectively in a team atmosphere and independently as required
- Comfortable working on multiple projects concurrently, sometimes reporting to different individuals
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including strong MS Office skills (Excel, Word, Powerpoint), and technical writing skills
- High attention to detail and accuracy of field notes
- Detailed knowledge of field sampling techniques
- Experience using field equipment, including GIS-related mobile data collection tools
- Willingness to learn new skills, have flexibility in undertaking work assignments and capable of handling multiple assignments
- Knowledge of relevant local provincial and federal environmental legislation and policies is an asset
- Eligible for federal security clearance
- A willingness to travel and periodically work extended hours
- Good driving record and valid driver’s license required
Education and Experience
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Engineering, Science, Forestry, or related field OR Technician or Technologist Diploma, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience
- Minimum of 2 years’ work experience.
- However, individuals with 1 year or less of work experience or equivalent (e.g. work co-ops, travel or other experience) should not be discouraged from applying.
Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
