Do you love to talk? We are actively seeking Museum Interpreters at the Burnaby Village Museum, a busy 10-acre site that emphasizes fun and meaningful learning, and values personal encounters with history. This is a public facing role interacting with both individual visitors and booked groups to foster an understanding and appreciation of Burnaby’s diverse history. Your responsibilities include engaging with visitors through informal conversations, answering questions, leading tours and general customer service. Museum Interpreters also demonstrate the use of exhibit equipment and crafts; lead school programs and assist with crowd management in busy exhibits. Additionally, the Museum Interpreter will prepare supplies and equipment for exhibit displays as directed; perform light cleaning duties on exhibits and artifacts; review and compile program information; and assist in the writing and editing of program related projects as directed. Museum Interpreters work with museum and student volunteers; provide input for the development of new programs; and participate in promotional activities such as photo and video shoots. And performs related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 supplemented by courses related to museum work plus sound related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. The ideal candidate is enthusiastic about interacting with the public and sharing knowledge in a dynamic, creative way. They will also have the ability to adapt and deliver interpretive programs,; demonstrate equipment, and lead activities or crafts for a variety of groups and individual visitors. Candidates have working knowledge of the principles, practices and educational objectives of museums. A working knowledge of general B.C. History, particularly in relation to the urban development of the Greater Vancouver area, is an asset. Please note that a Police Information Check is required for this position.

Pay Rate: $28.37 per hour + 12% in lieu of benefits (2024 Rates)

Location: Burnaby Village Museum

Hours of work: As this is an auxiliary position, hours and shifts can vary depending on operational requirements and are scheduled on an as needed basis which does not provide guaranteed hours. Typical shifts will be from:

  • Monday through Sunday between the hours of 8:00 AM to 9:30 PM
  • March – September (Spring Break and Summer Season): Monday to Sunday, between the hours of 8: 30 AM – 5:30 PM
  • October – January (Haunted Village and Festive Village seasons): Monday to Sunday, between the hours of 8:30 AM – 9:30 PM
