As a Junior Accountant (JA), you will provide support to the Financial Accounting Services team to ensure complete and accurate processing of financial data, address financial reporting and audit requests and maintain the appropriate financial records. You will be responsible for processing the financial data in accounting and budget systems, as per The City's guidelines and processes around journal entries and data entry. Primary duties include:
- Maintain applicable access rights to appropriate financial systems, sub-ledger with supporting systems, and system folders.
- Evaluate and assess the financial coding provided by Portfolio Finance/operational partners for completeness and accuracy.
- Investigate anomalies, present findings to applicable parties and correct errors.
- Collaborate with Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable teams to facilitate internal and external billings and appropriately enter financial information into the accounting system.
- Adhere to applicable journal entry and data processing policy and procedures implemented by the City.
- Prepare and maintain the financial reconciliations and supporting documentation for applicable general ledger accounts.
- Support Senior Accountant and Financial Services Lead to address Portfolio¿s Finance¿s requests in a timely manner.
- Initiate and prepare interim and year-end reporting preparations and submission to corporate finance teams.
- Responsible for preparing a complete set of financials, schedules and reporting binders for small sized business units.
- Receive, record and deposit cheques received from external customers to the City Cashiers.
- Assist other financial accounting services teams during busy time periods. Engage with customers and team members to plan for relief during vacations and absences.
- Participate in periodic reviews of the process documentation and business unit checklists with the leads and customer business units.
Qualifications
- A completed 1 year accounting certificate or diploma and completed at least of 10 post-secondary accounting and business courses recognized by the CPA (Chartered Professional Accountant) plus at least 3 years of experience with full cycle accounting and bookkeeping experience in a multi-person finance team; OR
- A degree in Business Administration or Commerce with a major in accounting and completed at least 14 post-secondary accounting and business courses recognized by the CPA (Chartered Professional Accountant) with at least 1 year of experience with full cycle accounting and bookkeeping experience in a multi-person finance team.
- Experience preparing interim and year-end financial schedules is required.
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel and Word) is required.
- Working knowledge of PeopleSoft Financial and Supply Chain Management (FSCM); Hyperion (Budget Planning and Reporting); and Oracle SmartView for Microsoft Office will be considered assets Any software, experience specific to the role that will be an asset?
- Success in this position requires analytical thinking, organization, communication and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
