The opportunity: Reporting to Senior Corporate Counsel, Wellington-Altus Private Wealth has an opportunity for a Summer Student-at-Law to collaborate with Corporate Counsel and the Privacy Officer to provide crucial support to the organization in a variety of areas, including, amongst others, business law, employment law, privacy law, contracting and dispute resolution.

The incumbent will be involved in legal research, document drafting, end-to-end team projects, regulatory reviews, process improvement opportunities, and report writing. The Summer Student-at-Law will become well-versed in legislation and regulations, review policies, and provide general administrative support to the legal team.

Key responsibilities include: Legal Risk Identification:

  • Analyze legal risks associated with financial transactions and activities.

Dispute Resolution:

  • Assist in legal disputes and litigation related to financial matters.

Legal Drafting:

  • Review, draft, and negotiate documents related to financial transactions and agreements.

Legal Research:

  • Conducts comprehensive legal research and analysis to provide accurate, well‑supported guidance on applicable laws, regulations, and precedents.

Due Diligence:

  • Conduct legal due diligence in financial transactions, mergers, and acquisitions.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Identify and implement regulatory requirements into compliance frameworks and operational procedures.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Current enrollment as a first- or second-year law student
  • Proficiency with the MSOffice suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook.
  • Proficiency with legal research tools, such as LexisNexis and/or Westlaw.
  • Dependability, integrity, competence, and a strong work ethic.
  • A detail-oriented approach with emphasis on a high degree of accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Effective interpersonal, organizational and communication skills required to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • An ability to maintain the highest levels of confidentiality.
