About the role

Reporting to the Director of Resource Development, the Senior Development Officer, Major Gifts and Planned Giving is responsible for developing and implementing a strong major gift and planned giving program. This includes managing a portfolio of donors and prospects, attracting new support, and contributing to a strategic prospecting plan using creative, donor-centered approaches to grow both the number of donors and total funds raised annually.

The role also supervises the Fund Development Associate, Major Gifts, supporting their growth in the department. As part of the Resource Development team—alongside portfolios such as campaigns, third-party events, signature events, mid-level and annual giving—the Senior Officer brings leadership, strategic thinking, and a results-driven mindset to program development and execution.

This position typically works 37.5 hours per week and is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain the major giving portfolio, including prospecting, measurement, management, and donor stewardship to increase the number of major donors and total dollars raised.
  • Maintain relationships with Planned Giving donors (expectancies) and cultivate prospective donors to secure new Planned Giving pledges.
  • Develop and implement a rigorous prospecting strategy and ensure stewardship strategies are in place and executed effectively.
    Ensure measurement and reporting align with the growth and sustainment of major and planned giving portfolios.
  • Research and prioritize prospects for potential major gift donations and planned gift pledges.
  • Prepare gift acceptance briefs, complete estate paperwork, and ensure internal departments are informed of gifts.
  • Monitor donor payments as per agreements and follow up when necessary.
  • Develop new and maintain established donor relationships.
  • Represent YW at external events, meetings, tours, and speaking engagements to increase donor awareness.
  • Leverage use of information management, Raiser’s Edge NXT (RENXT) in achieving fund development outcomes.
  • Meet, and strive to exceed, agreed targets including dollars raised, number of donors, number of gifts, number of moves, and number of asks.
  • Provide direct leadership and coaching to the Fund Development Associate, Major Gifts, ensuring effective, respectful, and timely communication.
  • Support the continued evolution of the program/department function and aligned people strategy, plan, and structure, leading a team with diverse experiences to develop, implement, and innovate services, systems, and tools.
  • Support the functional plan with clear direction and team goals, ensuring each team member understands their role and contribution to YW Calgary’s overall strategy.

  • Understand and remain current with YW Calgary Health, Safety and Wellness policies, practices and protocols and ensure work is performed in alignment to YW’s culture.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING:

  • Degree or diploma in a related field such as nonprofit studies, marketing, business, or communications.
  • A minimum of seven years of experience with a proven track record in developing, managing, and implementing a major giving portfolio that achieved significant financial goals. Experience in a related field (e.g., sales or senior leadership) may also be considered.
  • Demonstrated success in establishing and maintaining effective, professional relationships with both volunteers and donors.
  • Strong computer skills are required, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge or other donor relationship management systems.
  • Energetic, organized, detail-oriented, and able to multi-task and prioritize effectively.
  • A self-starter who demonstrates initiative.
  • Campaign development experience is considered an asset.
  • Must have affiliation with professional organizations such as AFP, CFRE or CAGP.
