Job Description

Unit/Project Description:

The Health Physics Department ensures the safety, continuous monitoring and training for all those who deal with radiation in the McMaster community. Health Physics is responsible for:

• Implementing the HPAC’s radiation protection program.

• Supervising the University’s common radioisotope laboratories and storage facilities.

• Providing such services as may be required for radiation protection and compliance with government regulations. Our Radiation Protection Programs ensure the safety of students, staff, the public, and the environment, while supporting the strong spirit of innovation at McMaster. Job Summary:

The Radiation Surveyor is responsible for providing consultation and audit services in the area of public and occupational radiation safety. Collects and transfers radiological waste and mitigates and eliminates radiation hazards from the University community.

Purpose and Key Functions:

• Inspect and audit laboratories, facilities, and workplaces for potentially hazardous materials and agents.

• Collect and count radiological samples and analyze results.

• Conduct measurements in the field to detect hazardous materials and agents, and interpret their impact with respect to established safety regulations.

• Collect radioactive waste from University facilities and transport materials safely between buildings.

• Conduct technical observations of handling techniques for hazardous materials.

• Commission and decommission radioisotope laboratories at the University.

• Make recommendations on safety related policies and procedures and safety program development.

• Issue written warnings and if necessary, stop work orders for infractions.

• Write operational procedures, reports and summaries of radioactive waste characterization, segregation, and amount disposed.

• Prepare high risk isotope monitoring reports.

• Create and complete forms and postings.

• Maintain and update inventory lists.

• Respond to inquiries, concerns, and complaints.

• Use defined formulas and equations to complete various calculations.

• Calibrate portable radiation detection instrumentation.

• Pipette and prepare samples for liquid scintillation counting.

• Operate various power tools and hydraulic forklifts.

• Respond to and resolve radiological and nuclear emergencies.

• Maintain security clearances sufficient to be granted unescorted access to the nuclear reactor.

Requirements:

2 year Community College diploma Radiation Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, or related field.

Requires 3 years of relevant experience.

Additional Information:

The successful candidate must pass a security background check as specified by the Nuclear Safety Control Act and will be classified as a Nuclear Energy Worker.
