Opportunity
MacEwan University is seeking a Systems Administrator, Windows for a full-time continuing opportunities with Information Services Technology.
The Systems Administrator supports the daily operation, reliability, and maintenance of the University’s IT infrastructure. You will be responsible for configuring, monitoring, and administering systems that enable academic, research, and administrative functions. You ensure that server environments, storage systems and virtualization platforms are stable, secure, and efficiently maintained. Additionally, you will focus on implementation and operations, with an emphasis on routine maintenance, support, and incident resolution.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building, installing, configuring, and maintaining physical servers and enterprise systems;
- Monitoring system performance to ensure uptime, security, and availability;
- Performing routine system monitoring for performance, security, and availability;
- Analyzing resource usage and recommending enhancements to improve performance;
- Diagnosing and resolving critical system outages affecting access to enterprise applications or other technologies, minimizing downtime and restoring services promptly;
- Analyzing system logs and metrics to identify recurring issues or bottlenecks and executing optimization tasks such as patching and configuration tuning based on system monitoring results;
- Contributing to the development of scripts and deployment pipelines to improve consistency and efficiency of system tasks; and
- Providing back-up and coverage for other Systems Administrators. Cross-training and knowledge transfer between functional areas is expected and essential to ensure continual service delivery in the case of team absences, vacancies, or fluctuations in volume of work.
SKILLS
You will have:
- A strong understanding of system architecture, networking, and IT security principles;
- Proficiency with scripting and system monitoring tools;
- Proficient in server administration (Windows, Linux);
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS);
- Programming/scripting experience with Python, PowerShell, and VB scripting;
- Working knowledge of virtualization and systems security;
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills;
- Experience analyzing logs and metrics to identify technical problems;
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively;
- Strong interpersonal skills (verbal and written) to interact with end-users, technical teams, and stakeholders at various levels;
- The ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented collaborative environment; and
- Familiarity with ITIL processes (e.g., incident/change management), DevOps practices, and scripting for automation (e.g., PowerShell, Bash) would be considered an asset;
QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum of a diploma in Computer Science, Information Systems or related field.
- A minimum of 3 years in systems administration, IT operations, or infrastructure support in a medium to large-scale enterprise environment.
- Experience with routine system patching, monitoring, and scripting, and with enterprise storage and backup tools.
- Experience deploying, configuring, and maintaining Windows and/or Linux servers, virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V), and enterprise storage or backup systems.
- Experience in a post-secondary or public-sector environment is considered an asset.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- The nature of the position requires the Systems Administrator to participate in the ITS on-call schedule for after-hours support. The position may be required to work outside of normal operational hours (e.g., evenings and weekends) to address urgent issues as they arise.
