General Information:

**Job Title:**Principal Architect – Platform & Distributed Systems (Cloud)
**Location:**Toronto (Onsite/ Hybrid)
**Job Type:**Full-Time

**Reporting Line:**Senior Technical Lead

Salary Range: $185–$210k CAD per year**(negotiable)**

About Fulfillment IQ (FIQ):

At Fulfillment IQ, we’re disruptors in the supply chain and logistics sector. As an award-winning supply chain tech company, we design and deliver cutting-edge solutions for D2C brands, retailers, and 3PLs.

Our teams solve complex logistics challenges by building scalable software platforms, implementing modern cloud infrastructure, and enabling high-performance data and system integrations across the supply chain ecosystem.

If you thrive in technically complex environments and enjoy building systems that scale in the real world, we’d love to meet you.

Role Overview:

We are seeking a Principal Architect to own the technical architecture and long-term evolution of Fulfillment IQ’s core platform systems powering integrations and distributed processing workloads.

*This is not a feature delivery role. This is a platform ownership role.*This role will support Fulfillment IQ’s CrossDock platform (Workbench/Zynque) with a focus on High-throughput integration systems & Distributed computation and simulation at scale.

You will operate as the senior technical authority responsible for ensuring our platform architecture (including integrations and distributed processing systems) is scalable, resilient, high-throughput, and cost-efficient as the platform grows.

This role combines strategic architecture leadership, selective hands-on engineering, and cross-functional technical influence. You will set standards, define architectural direction, and ensure that small inefficiencies today do not become large operational and cost problems at scale.

This role goes beyond traditional integration architecture. You will design systems that handle both high-throughput integration workloads and distributed computation and data processing at scale (e.g., simulations, optimization engines). We are not looking for a connector-focused integration architect. We are looking for a platform architect who understands how systems behave under load.

Must Have:

  • 10+ years of experience building cloud-native backend or platform systems
  • Proven experience owning architecture for distributed, high-throughput systems
  • Strong experience designing distributed systems , event-driven architectures, or high-throughput backend platforms
  • Experience designing systems for high-scale data processing, distributed computation, or performance-critical workloads
  • Strong understanding of system design trade-offs (latency, throughput, consistency, cost)
  • Experience designing systems that operate under real production constraints (high concurrency, failure scenarios, and scaling limits)
  • Deep understanding of cloud infrastructure (Azure preferred) and performance optimization
  • Experience working with Python-based backend systems and modern cloud architectures
  • Ability to lead through technical influence rather than formal people management

Nice to Have:

  • Experience building extensible platforms (plugins, connectors, modular systems)
  • Experience with streaming technologies such as Kafka, Azure Event Hub, or similar platforms
  • Exposure to logistics, supply chain, fintech, or data-intensive enterprise systems
  • Experience with MongoDB or distributed data storage systems

Key Responsibilities:

Architecture & Standards

  • Own end-to-end architecture for FIQ’s platform systems, including integration layers and distributed processing components
  • Design scalable architecture across event-driven systems, API-based services, and distributed computation and data processing workloads
  • Design and optimize systems for distributed computation workloads (e.g., simulations, optimization engines, large-scale processing)
  • Establish architectural standards and "golden path" development practices
  • Define patterns for connectors, transformations, retries, fault tolerance, and observability

Performance & Optimization

  • Identify architectural bottlenecks before they scale
  • Optimize compute, memory, I/O, and cloud infrastructure costs
  • Ensure platform reliability under increasing workloads
  • Lead architectural reviews and enforce design standards

Technical Leadership

  • Act as primary technical gatekeeper for platform decisions
  • Build POCs for complex platform, distributed systems, and performance-critical challenges
  • Unblock technically complex challenges across teams
  • Translate customer requirements into scalable technical designs

Collaboration

  • Partner with Product, Engineering, and Infrastructure teams
  • Communicate trade-offs, risks, and long-term implications to stakeholders
  • Maintain clear technical documentation

What Success Looks Like in the First 90 Days:

30 Days In

·       Develop a deep understanding of Fulfillment IQ’s platform architecture (integration + distributed systems), and technical roadmap

·       Build strong working relationships with Engineering, Product, and Infrastructure teams

·       Review current platform design, performance bottlenecks, and architectural risks

·       Identify quick-win optimization opportunities and priority architectural gaps

60 Days In

·       Establish clear architectural standards and platform design guidelines

·       Deliver at least one Proof of Concept or reference implementation priority platform or distributed systems challenge

·       Begin improving performance, scalability, or cost efficiency in at least one core platform area

·       Introduce structured architecture review processes

90 Days In

·       Present a forward-looking platform architecture roadmap to leadership

·       Demonstrate measurable improvement in system reliability, performance, or operational efficiency

·       Ensure teams are aligned on platform standards and architectural direction

·       Establish a clear long-term technical vision for the platform (integration + distributed systems)

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

  • Reduced failures across integration and distributed platform systems
  • Improved throughput and performance under load
  • Adoption of standardized patterns across teams
  • Reduced technical debt and architectural rework
  • Improved resource utilization and cost efficiency
  • System performance under high concurrency / high throughput conditions
