To apply, please submit your cover letter and resume on-line by October 13, 2025 Job Summary In this role, you will be scheduled to work one of the following 40-Hour shift schedules:
- Overnight Shift 11:00 PM to 7:30 AM (Sunday Night to Friday Morning)
- Afternoon Shift 3:00 PM to 11:30PM Midnight (Monday to Friday)
Reporting to the Supervisor - Roads, the Winter Road Patroller/Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for patrolling City owned roads utilizing ½ to 3 Ton trucks to identify and document required repair or maintenance work, right of way deficiencies or winter road conditions, all in accordance with the Minimum Maintenance Standards. During winter operations, this position will also be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of large articulating loaders for the purpose of loading winter control materials onto trucks. The position will also require manual labour, and the operation of hand tools for repair work as assigned.
Equipment operated includes 1 tonne trucks with dump box, small tractors, 3-yard articulating loaders, accessory equipment such as trailers, hand mowers, trimmers, chainsaw, jackhammer, sidewalk grinder both walk behind and ride on, etc. for purposes of maintenance and repair work related to roads, sidewalks/boulevards, culverts, curbs, catch basins, storm water management, barriers, snow removal, safety devices, etc.
Job Duties & Responsibilities Duties will include but are not limited to:
- Patrolling of City owned roads in accordance with the Minimum Maintenance Standards.
- Identifying and documenting road and right of way deficiencies as well as reporting winter road conditions to Supervisor.
- Prepares maintains and completes accurate and detailed patrol inspection and daily log records.
- Loading of salter trucks with winter control material using large articulating loader.
- Debris and garbage pickup, grass cutting, temporary pot hole repair, catch basin repair, sod repair, fencing, traffic control and safety devices, spill clean-up, debris removal, etc.
- Load and unload materials such as salt, sand, cones, signs and shovels, etc. to and from the vehicle to conduct minor repairs within the R-O-W to ensure public safety.
- Winter Control operations including snow plowing/removal, sanding/salting, hand shoveling, debris removal, etc.
- Compliance with Division standards and Health & Safety policies and procedures.
- Overtime and rotational shift work as assigned.
- Providing backup support to Operations Labourer/Drivers as directed.
- Contributing to a positive, productive, healthy/safe and respectful work environment;
- Fostering and modeling customer service excellence.
Minimum Requirements
- Minimum 100 hours of seat time operating large articulating loaders with a focus on loading trucks and winter maintenance.
- High School Graduate or equivalent plus roads maintenance courses.
- Demonstrated experience in and working knowledge of roads maintenance, preferably in an urban growth environment.
- Experience operating a range of light and heavy-duty vehicles.
- Knowledge of Minimum Maintenance Standards.
- Ability to operate and perform routine maintenance & inspections on a full range of vehicles, equipment & tools as described above.
- Excellent work habits; good judgment; dependable, reliable, customer service attitude, time management, problem solving and record keeping skills required.
- May be required to write a knowledge test and take a road test.
- Submission and maintenance of Ontario Class G licence. As a condition of employment, you will be required to provide a satisfactory driver’s abstract (No demerit points plus no more than 2 infractions – max of one moving and one non-moving conviction).
- Ontario Class DZ licence is an asset.
- Must be available for overtime and rotational standby as required.
- Must be physically able to perform the bona fide duties of the job including heavy lifting up to 50 lbs.
