Tlingit Cultural and Language Assistant – Atlin School
Atlin School is now accepting applications for the Tlingit Language and Cultural Assistant position. This is a 30-hour per week part-time, continuing position, effective August 24th, 2026. The rate of pay is $36.16 per hour. Terms and conditions of employment are governed by C.U.P.E. Local 2052-02 collective agreement.
The Tlingit Language and Cultural Assistant will:
- Provide academic guidance, assistance and direction to Indigenous students as needed.
- Liaise between home, school and parent/guardian through visitations and consultations.
- Monitor student academic and social development as well as attendance.
- Provide tutoring and classroom support as needed.
- Assist teaching staff with assessing progress, planning interventions, enrichment, etc.
- Promote awareness, comprehension and fluency of an Indigenous language and culture.
- Integrate Indigenous cultural activities and Indigenous language instruction.
- Assist teachers in developing, preparing, presenting and integrating Indigenous language/cultural activities into the regular curriculum.
- Work with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and the Tlingit community to gather Indigenous resources and knowledge.
- Collaborate with the School District No. 87 Indigenous Education Department (curriculum, projects, and programs)
- Organize and participate in cultural activities on the land.
- To increase the sense of belonging, identity, and self-esteem in a caring and inclusive environment for all Indigenous learners.
- To improve the physical well-being of Indigenous learners
- Maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information seen or heard.
- Maintain familiarity with Workers Compensation Board (WCB) safety procedures.
- Provide a positive role model for all students.
- Maintain flexible hours to run before school or after school programs.
**QUALIFICATIONS: ******
- Secondary school graduation preferred, supplemented by training in language education.
- Valid class 5 BC driver's license.
- Has knowledge of, or a strong interest in learning about and supporting Tlingit heritage, language, and cultural teachings in a school setting.
- Ability to work effectively in diverse classroom settings.
- Work cooperatively with the school and the community to ensure a common direction as outlined in the 3Nations Education Partnership Agreement and the Local Tuition Agreement.
- May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
