Apprentice Mechanic
About the role
Under the supervision of the Manager of Operations and Transportation with guidance and on-the-job-training from a designated journeyperson, the Mechanic Apprentice will learn to perform inspections, maintenance, repairs, alterations and modifications of district school buses, vehicles and grounds-keeping equipment within the current scope of their apprenticeship level.
Duties And Responsibilities
Assists in the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance and minor repair of district buses, fleet vehicles and other equipment utilizing a variety of tools, hoists, floor jacks and materials. Performs routine and preventative maintenance tasks such as basic vehicle servicing to more difficult tasks such as engine or transmission overhaul. Learns to use diagnostic tools and equipment to identify mechanical issues. Performs all work in accordance with applicable statutes, regulations and codes. Assists with maintaining accurate records on all district vehicles including inspections, repairs, maintenance undertaken and servicing recommendations. Completes reports, work orders and orders parts as authorized. Loads and unloads vehicles and transports materials and equipment as required. Communicates positively and effectively and interact as a collaborative and consultative team member. Maintains tools, equipment and a clean, safe work environment. Reports unsafe conditions. Understands and acts in accordance with school and district policies and procedures, WorkSafe BC Regulations, Motor Vehicle Act, and National Safety Code. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or designated journeyperson.
Required Qualifications, Knowledge, And Skills
Grade 12. Successful completion of Level 1 training (first year) in Automotive Service Technician, Heavy-Duty Equipment Technician, or completion of a related pre-apprentice/foundation program. Good mechanical aptitude. Ability to proactively problem-solve and think logically. Computer skills and experience preferred. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Strong organizational skills, detail-oriented with ability to multi-task. Accountability and dependability with great time management. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds. B.C. Class 1 or 2 driver's license with air brake endorsement considered an asset. Working knowledge of other trades systems such as capable of working on electrical, mechanical, plumbing, heating and cooling systems is an asset. First Aid qualification is an asset.
This is a full-time temporary position at the School Board Office Mechanical Shop from August 10, 2026 to approximately August 13, 2027 . The wage for this position is as per the Letter of Understanding in the Collective Agreement between the Board of School Trustees for School District 10 (Arrow Lakes) and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 2450.
