Educational Assistants – Casual Positions

JOB OVERVIEW:
Working with students as part of a support team collaborating with, as well as under the direction of the classroom teacher, resource teacher and school principal. Performing duties as assigned by supervisor such as, monitoring and implementing behaviour support measures as outlined in safety plans; providing various levels of program support; and implementing health and medical plans and protocols.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide support in the delivery of programs for students as described on the Individual Education Plan (IEP) under the guidance of the teacher. Creating and implementing the use of visuals aids, manipulatives, and other supports to reinforce learning relating to curriculum and alternative goals such as life and social skills, speech/language support.
- Implement health and medical protocols for students that include duties such as, but not limited to, support for allergies, feeding, lifting, positioning, mobility, toileting, catheterization, suctioning, personal hygiene, diabetic, seizure or other medical conditions as outlined in Board procedures and Ministry guidelines (e.g. Policy Program Memorandum 81).
- Deliver programs as outlined by the physio and occupational therapist that may include a range of motion exercises, sensory diets, use of equipment and materials, in and out of the classroom to support learning and therapeutic needs.
- Implement behaviour support measures for students as required, working collaboratively and providing support to the multi-disciplinary team through observing and tracking student behaviours, providing information and input for the development and review of safety plans.
- Implement assistive technology strategies by supporting students with their use of devices and/or programs to enhance learning.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possess a two-year college diploma in a related field such as Educational Assistant, Developmental Services Worker, Social Services Worker Early Childhood Educator, Behavioural Science, or a related Human Services discipline.
- Possess six months to one year of combined related experience and on-the-job-training to be familiar with job duties and responsibilities such as behavior support, medical protocols, program support, etc.
- Behaviour management safety training, Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training and current First Aid/CPR certification considered an asset.
- Must possess effective communication, time management and problem-solving skills, strong computer skills, demonstrated ability to protect sensitive information, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
