Job Description: Shift :12am -8 am - every weekend Saturday and Sunday- Overflow Shelter POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY: This role is responsible for providing front line service to the clients within the context of the overall operations, including maintaining the security of the facility and its clients, direct support, assistance and encouragement to the clients. The role contributes to the broader mission and values of The Salvation Army, upholding standards of service that reflect its spiritual and social commitment to the community. ACCOUNTABILITIES: · Takes responsibility for routine intake processes and decisions, following standard procedures and directs clients to appropriate shelter services · Records all information as per policy · Liaises with referral sources and other external agencies as needed (for example: welfare, police, urgent situations, medical facilities, etc.) · Fosters positive relations with community social services agencies/resources · Answer incoming inquiries and direct as needed · Adhere to standards that are consistent with the values & philosophy of The Salvation Army and Peel Residential Services mission and values · Performs other duties as assigned MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Reports directly to the Shift Supervisor FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT: - May be involved in minor financial transactions on a regular or relief basis and is expected to exercise sound judgment in the use of organizational and personal resources. - May be authorized to handle small amounts of cash, including disbursements and collections. - May have access to confidential and sensitive information and is expected to maintain strict confidentiality at all times. WORKING CONDITIONS: - Work is primarily performed in a supportive housing facility/shelter within the ministry unit. - The role requires standing, walking, bending, and lifting of items up to 30 lbs. - The incumbent may interact with individuals displaying challenging behaviours. - The incumbent may carry a pager/walkie talkie and will work shifts. - This position may occasionally require local travel or transportation-related responsibilities. - May be required to deal with client overdose and other medical situations. The above responsibilities must be discharged in accordance with The Salvation Army’s Mission Statement, in a professional manner, upholding our code of conduct. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Qualifications and Certifications: - Completion of a formal post-secondary/college certificate program in Social Work or related field. - Valid Driver’s License and clear driver’s abstract is required. Experience and Knowledge Requirements: - At least one year of related experience is a minimum requirement for this role, experience with frontline work in a social service setting is a strong asset. - Knowledge of client community. - Knowledge of community resources. - An alternative level or combination of education and experience may be acceptable. Skills and Capabilities: - Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities. - Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures. - Good oral and written communication skills. - Good conflict-resolution skills and ability to de-escalate the situation. - Adaptability to change and frequent interruptions. - Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment and take the initiative. - Demonstrated attention to detail with good analytical and problem-solving skills. - Demonstrated patience, understanding, and professionalism in all interactions. - High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professional ethics, with a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility. - Strong organizational skills and the ability to follow detailed instructions accurately. - Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including active listening, empathy, and the ability to work effectively with staff, clients, families, volunteers, and visitors from diverse cultural backgrounds.
