Qualifications
Successful completion of a two year post secondary Facility Maintenance Mechanic diploma program, or equivalent trade; A minimum of three years of related job experience in maintenance or construction; Proven ability to write text, including writing requisitions for supplies, and writing reports regarding occurrences at the job site; and the ability to read and understand plans, blueprints, sketches, manufacturer’s literature on the installation and maintenance scheduling of equipment, WHMIS information, Material Safety Data Sheets and safety training course materials; as well as the ability to calculate cost, labour and material estimates by performing arithmetic functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and algebra; Sound knowledge of fire codes, building codes and safety regulations, practices and procedures related to trades and construction, such as WHMIS, use of personal protective equipment, lifting techniques, materials handling as well as the use and care of hand tools and power equipment; Sound knowledge of practices, tools and materials used in building maintenance and repair work; Hold a valid Class “G” driver’s license; Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to building maintenance work, including the safe operation of all required equipment and machinery, including working from ladders, scaffolding, scissor-lifts and man-lifts; Basic working knowledge of a computerized environment, including data entry in various software programs, internet and e-mail; Good analytical skills and abilities; Demonstrated ability to prioritize assignments and work without direct supervision; Strong written and verbal communication skills. Good interpersonal skills with ability to function effectively with supervisors, administrators, plant staff and contractors; Ability to work independently and in a team atmosphere; and Subject to the Board’s duty to accommodate, ability to perform required physical tasks, including climbing ladders, and scaffolding, pushing, pulling, lifting and carrying moderate and heavy loads, including equipment, furniture, materials and supplies.
Duties/Responsibilities
Perform skilled work in the maintenance, repair, alteration and remodeling of buildings; Receive repair requests by using an on-line work order system to record, plan and track work assignments. Visit repair locations, study building plans and drawings as required, determine materials, tools, and sequence of work to be performed, estimate and order materials and supplies; Perform preventative maintenance, routine maintenance, installation and repair on the Board’s mechanical equipment, HVAC systems, well pumps and water treatment equipment; Deal with day to day function of electrical facilities in schools and respond to reports of electrical malfunctions, breakdowns and power failures; and make routine electrical repairs; Repair/replace roofing; assemble, install, and repair pipes, fittings, water fixtures, heating and drainage systems; Maintain school grounds including landscaping, tree pruning, grass cutting and snow removal; Comply with legal requirements with respect to safety and the fire code, building code and other related laws and regulations. Follow safe work practices and procedures, including ensuring that proper protective equipment is worn and maintained; Work in compliance with WHMIS regulations and ensure that chemicals are used, labelled and stored safely in accordance with the Material Safety Data Sheet. This includes referencing MSDS’s using computer programs. Prepare and maintain accurate records as required, including work orders, requisitions for supplies, and maintenance records for maintenance/ mechanical equipment; Demonstrate a continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service; Perform caretaking duties as required by the Supervisor of Maintenance; Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Maintenance or Manager of Facilities.
