About the role
BCIT’sDigital Arts, Media and Designdepartment within theSchool of Business + Mediaoffers a range of programs in the areas of Animation and Gaming, Web and Mobile, and Communication and Graphics. We are currently seeking atemporary, part-time (0.2FTE) Instructorto teach full-time students in theDiploma in 3D Modeling, Art and Animation, from May to August 2026.
Duties & Responsibilities
The instructor assignment is for:
-MDAA****3542 Lighting and Rendering 3 (20%)
- Real-time rendering is used across many different industries. In this course, students will examine in depth the capabilities, limitations, and advantages of rendering in a real-time renderer. Students will set up cameras and learn to animate their cameras to effectively show off models and environments. Lighting will be explored for both pre-computed lighting and run-time lighting. Materials will be created with parameters exposed for quickly iterating on different looks for the surface. Finally, post-process volumes will be used to achieve cinema-quality renders.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS**:**
- Diploma or Degree in 3D Animation, Game Art, Visual Effects, Computer Graphics, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional industry experience.
- Minimum 5 years of professional experience in lighting, rendering, environment art, or technical art within the game development, animation, or visual effects industry.
- Demonstrated expertise in real-time rendering workflows using Unreal Engine, including scene lighting, camera setup, and environment presentation.
- Strong understanding of real-time lighting techniques, including both pre-computed lighting and run-time lighting systems.
- Experience creating materials and shaders in node-based material editors, including adjustable parameters for iterative look development.
- Experience working with post-processing tools, including post-process volumes and cinematic effects used to enhance real-time renders.
- Familiarity with environment lighting techniques, including sky lighting, atmospheric effects, fog, volumetrics, and HDRI lighting setups.
- Experience creating cinematic camera setups and camera animation to showcase models and environments effectively.
- Experience working with real-time particle systems, such as Niagara or equivalent systems, used to simulate environmental effects.
- Familiarity with real-time rendering optimization techniques, including performance considerations and balancing visual quality with runtime constraints.
- Ability to guide students in developing portfolio-quality real-time renders suitable for demo reels and professional presentations.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to support students from a range of skill levels.
Desired Qualifications:

Previous post-secondary teaching or mentoring experience.

Demonstrated industry success with appropriate and current experience and skills in the entire 3D pipeline including: 3D Modeling, Animating, Rigging, Texturing, Lighting, and Rendering.

Experience in Redshift, Arnold, and Unreal Engine.

Salary Range
$65,045 - $113,545 per annum
Additional Salary Information
Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment. Salary based on education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
