About the role
BCIT’sDigital Arts, Media and Designdepartment within theSchool of Business + Mediaoffers a range of programs in the areas of Animation and Gaming, Web and Mobile, and Communication and Graphics. We are currently seeking atemporary, part-time (0.2FTE) Instructorto teach full-time students in theDiploma in 3D Modeling, Art and Animation, from May to August 2026.
Duties & Responsibilities
The instructor assignment is for:
-MDAA****2335 Rigging 2 (20%)
- In this course, students will build on the essential rigging techniques learned in the previous term and advance their skills in 3D character setup. Students will create a proper skeleton for a human or creature character based on the expected motions, set up character rigs for that skeleton and skin, and bind the structures to the mesh. In addition, students will utilize the inverse and forward kinematics controls for complex animation. Creating facial rigs for human or non-human characters to present different facial expressions and lip movement is also discussed. Students will practice scripting for rigging to enhance the overall performance of a character rig.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS**:**
- Diploma or Degree in 3D Animation, Game Art, Visual Effects, Computer Graphics, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional industry experience.
- Minimum 5 years of professional experience in character rigging, technical animation, or technical direction within the film, animation, or game development industry.
- Demonstrated expertise in rigging workflows in Autodesk Maya, including joint hierarchies, constraints, deformers, and animator-friendly control systems.
- Strong experience creating character rigs for bipedal or creature characters, including IK/FK limb setups and advanced spine systems.
- Experience implementing IK/FK switching systems and rig control structures suitable for production animation workflows.
- Demonstrated experience building facial rigs using blendshapes and control systems for expressive character animation.
- Familiarity with advanced deformation techniques, including ribbon rigs, squash and stretch systems, and stylized rigging functionality.
- Experience creating hard-surface rigs using constraints, rivets, and mechanical rigging techniques.
- Working knowledge of Python scripting for rigging workflows, including automation tools and rigging utilities within Autodesk Maya.
- Experience building custom rigging tools or user interfaces to streamline animation workflows.
- Strong understanding of character skinning and weighting techniques, including layer-based workflows such as NG Skin Tools or equivalent tools.
- Ability to provide technical guidance and constructive critique to help students create production-ready rigs.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to support students from a range of skill levels
Desired Qualifications:

Previous post-secondary teaching or mentoring experience.

Professional experience working as a Rigging TD or Character TD on shipped games, animated series, or feature film productions.

Demonstrated industry success with appropriate and current experience and skills in the entire 3D pipeline including: 3D Modeling, Animating, Rigging, Texturing, Lighting, and Rendering

Experience in Redshift, Arnold, and Unreal Engine

Salary Range
$65,045 - $113,545 per annum
Additional Salary Information
Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment. Salary based on education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
