We serve approximately 27,000 K–12 students across 41 elementary and 8 secondary schools, along with more than 6,000 adult learners through Burnaby Community & Continuing Education. The Opportunity
The Burnaby Board of Education invites applications from outstanding educational leaders for the position of Assistant Superintendent. Reporting to the Superintendent of Schools, the Assistant Superintendent is a key member of the senior leadership team and plays a pivotal role in advancing the District's strategic priorities.
This position provides both operational and strategic leadership, including oversight of a family of schools (K–12) and leadership of district initiatives and portfolios aligned with student learning, staff development, and system improvement.
Key Responsibilities
The Assistant Superintendent will:
- Provide leadership, supervision, and support to a portfolio, including an assigned family of schools
- Supervise and mentor school administrators and assigned district staff
- Build leadership capacity across the system through coaching, professional learning, and succession planning
- Collaborate across departments to align district priorities, staffing, and resources with student learning needs
- Support school communities in addressing complex issues and ensuring safe, inclusive, and equitable learning environments
- Foster high levels of student achievement, well-being, and engagement through effective instructional leadership and continuous improvement planning
- Engage with partner groups in meaningful and respectful ways
- Contribute to district-wide planning, policy development, and operational effectiveness
- Demonstrate strong political acumen in navigating complex organizational and community contexts
- Lead and support the implementation of the District's Strategic Plan and Ministry initiatives
- Support the Board and Superintendent in strategic planning, system improvement, and alignment of resources, including budget considerations
The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will bring:
- A demonstrated record of exceptional leadership in public education, including district and/or school-based administrative experience
- A commitment to equity, inclusion, and Truth and Reconciliation, with experience working with Indigenous communities and diverse populations
- Proven ability to build and lead high-performing, collaborative teams and foster strong professional relationships
- Deep understanding of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and current educational trends
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage complex and sensitive issues
- High levels of emotional intelligence, integrity, and sound judgment
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, politically complex environment
Qualifications
- Master's degree in Educational and Administrative Leadership, Curriculum Development, Supervision of Instruction or a related field
- Valid BC Teaching Certificate and membership in good standing with the Teacher Regulation Branch
- Significant leadership experience in the public K–12 education system, including school and/or district leadership roles
- Demonstrated experience supervising staff and leading system-wide initiatives

Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for this position is established in accordance with BC Public School Employers' Association (BCPSEA). Placement within the range will be based on qualifications and experience.
- Salary range: $211,417 – $234,908 annually
