About the role
About The Role:
Reporting to the Team Lead, Corporate Accounting, the Senior Accountant ensures the integrity of the general ledger and corporate financial records while also driving decision-quality insights by connecting accounting results to operational performance, risks, and opportunities. This position plays a critical role in month-end and year-end close processes, technical accounting matters, internal controls, and financial statement preparation. The Senior Accountant also serves as a subject matter expert, provides guidance to other finance team members, and supports audits and special projects as required.
What You Will Do:
Essential duties, responsibilities, and performance measures
Service Excellence : Accountable for the accurate capture, recording, processing, and analysis of corporate financial information, and for ensuring compliance with accounting standards, internal policies, and external reporting requirements.
Performance Measures include:
Preparation, review, and approval of journal entries and account reconciliations. Proactive participation in month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, including coordination of timelines and deliverables. Preparation and review of internal and external financial statements, schedules, and supporting working papers, including explaining result drivers. Supporting technical accounting analysis and documentation for new or complex transactions and accounting standards. Turns complex accounting topics into plain-language recommendations for non-finance leaders and operational stakeholders. Acting as a key point of contact for auditors, including preparation of audit schedules and responses to audit inquiries. Supporting regulatory and stakeholder reporting requirements, including:
Canada Revenue Agency
Funders
Financial institutions and lenders
Assist in maintaining a departmental calendar of reporting dates for information submission to external agencies.
Leadership: Demonstrates expertise, mentorship, and continuous improvement.
Performance Measures include:
Reviewing work prepared by others to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with standards. Identifying opportunities to improve accounting processes, controls, and efficiency, and leading implementation efforts where appropriate. Driving automation/standardization (templates, reconciliations, controls) Leading or supporting cross-functional finance initiatives and projects.
- Team Work : Works cooperatively and collaboratively with finance colleagues, operational leaders, and external partners.
Performance Measures include:
Consulting with Operations and Finance leaders regarding financial results, accounting issues, and reporting requirements. Responding effectively to questions related to financial statements, accounting treatment, and corporate reporting. Supporting a positive and collaborative team environment.
- Pro-active Learner : Demonstrates commitment to staying current with accounting standards, policies, and best practices.
Performance Measures include:
Understanding, following, and applying all organizational standards, policies, and codes of conduct. Actively participating in professional education, internal training, and organizational initiatives. Staying abreast of changes in accounting standards, legislation, and regulatory requirements. Contributing to workplace projects and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
- Safety : Contributes to a safe environment for residents, the team and self by understanding and adhering to safety guidelines and practices at all times.
Performance Measures include:
Identifies and mitigates unsafe conditions in the work environment, including immediate reporting of any unsafe conditions. Strong knowledge of body mechanics and proper lifting techniques. Utilizes the reporting process for Employee Injury and Hazardous conditions and resident unusual occurrences. Participates in fire drills and understands fire, WHMIS, MSIP and general safety procedures
Qualifications
Education & Professional Designation
A Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, or Finance.
A Canadian or international accounting designation is required. MBA and related finance, accounting and operations experienced also considered an asset.
Experience A minimum of 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience, including corporate or complex multi-entity environments. Experience with financial statement preparation, audits, and internal controls.
Additional skills Comfort engaging across the organization; enjoys partnering with non-finance teams. High curiosity: asks “why” and investigates drivers, not just symptoms. Bias for action: identifies issues and proposes solutions with clear next steps. Business-ready communication: concise, structured, audience-specific Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills. Advanced proficiency in Excel and MS Office; strong ERP experience. Experience with Workday software considered an asset. Ability to manage multiple priorities while also meeting deadlines. High level of attention to detail and professional judgment.
