About the Organization Unison at Kerby Centre is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of older Calgarians. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to meaningful community work and build a career in the charitable sector.
Job Purpose To support all shelter operations and develop a resource network for each client. The Resource Worker is accountable for the safety of the building and residents during their shift and assumes a leadership role in the absence of Shelter Management or Case Workers.
Duties & Responsibilities
Client Responsibilities
- Manage doors and respond to the 24/7 Elder Abuse Resource Line
- Provide support, information, and referrals by phone and in person
- Stay informed about clients’ needs and goals and document all relevant interactions
- Engage with residents daily and provide support as needed
- Resolve conflicts as they arise
- Accompany clients to appointments when required
- Complete intake documentation and provide shelter orientation to new clients
- Ensure all Elder Abuse Response Team (EART) calls are properly referred to Management
Task Assignment
- Receive tasks from Case Worker or Management at the beginning of each shift
- Support practicum students, volunteers, and new staff
- Complete daily shelter tasks
Building and Security Responsibilities
- Ensure the safety of all individuals in the shelter
- Follow all health, safety, and fire regulations
- Respond to phone and intercom inquiries according to procedures
- Monitor security systems and screen visitors
- Conduct visual building checks after business hours
- Respond to incidents and contact on-call staff, police, or management when needed
- Maintain a clean and safe environment
Community Perspective
- Maintain knowledge of community resources
- Work professionally with community partners
Organizational Perspective
- Be familiar with Unison services and programs
- Attend staff meetings or review meeting minutes if unable to attend
Night Shift Responsibilities
- Complete all overnight duties as outlined in the Night Task Binder
Job Requirements
Education
- Degree or two-year post-secondary diploma preferred
- Students currently enrolled in relevant programs will be considered
Experience
- Experience in shelters, resource lines, or distress lines preferred
- Experience or training in family violence, elder abuse, marginalized populations, addictions, and mental health is an asset
Additional Training
- First Aid and CPR (Basic Rescuer Level) required
- Registration with Alberta College of Social Workers is an asset
Core Competencies
- Calm under pressure
- Organized and proactive
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Basic computer skills
Working Conditions
- Must be available for at least 3 shifts per month, including one overnight shift when available
- Shift times: 07:45–15:45, 15:15–22:15, 22:00–08:00
- Breaks are taken near clients, doors, and phones and are paid
- Food is available to prepare during shifts
- Casual role with shifts primarily on weekends and holidays
- May work alone with access to on-call support and safety protocols
- Shifts may be offered on short notice
- Regular interaction with individuals experiencing stress, trauma, addictions, or mental health challenges
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work extended shifts (10+ hours if required)
- Must remain alert and active throughout the shift
- Ability to assist residents during emergencies, including using stairs

About Kerby Centre
Kerby Centre is the place to be if you’re over 55! The Centre was established in 1973 to enhance the quality of life for older persons. Located at the western edge of Calgary’s downtown, the Centre provides an array of active living programs and preventive services.
Kerby Centre was founded as an organization that would be run by seniors, for seniors. The Board of Directors is comprised entirely of seniors and is responsible for the operation of Kerby Centre. Assisting the Board are fifty professional staff and over 400 volunteers.
