Additional Information
This casual position requires the availability of two full days or four half days per week. If you’re currently in a continuous lunch supervisor position please indicate your hours in your resume to advise if it will fit the casual requirement with half days.
Additional Information
Christine Meikle School offers highly specialized programming for students with complex medical, cognitive and behavioural challenges. This position will involve supporting students whose primary learning needs are safety, regulation and communication. Flexibility, creativity, collaboration, patience and consistency are essential.
This is a physically demanding position. Responsibilities may include:
- Heavy lifting, pushing and pulling
- Repetitive physical motions
- Physical escorts or other behavioural interventions with large, high school aged students who exhibit severe externalizing behaviours
Knowledge and skills related to the use of augmented communication, strategies for supporting students with autism spectrum disorders, and training with the Mandt system are assets.
All staff are expected to participate in swimming with students.
Students at Christine Meikle School have complex learning, medical, and emotional needs. Students require medical procedures administered by a Licensed Practical Nurse or they have a high frequency of demonstrating behaviours that are harmful to themselves or to others.
The position may require the candidate to support students with:
- Multiple disabilities
- Have severe to profound delays in both expressive and receptive language
- Have severe to profound delays in fine and gross motor skills
- Require extensive personal care
- Require supervision and support in warm water therapy pool
Class size and staffing are carefully evaluated on an ongoing basis based on unique learner needs and class complexity.
This position is in support of Division III and IV assisting students with speech and language delay, sensory processing, autism spectrum disorder, down syndrome, ADD, ADHD, FAS, ODD, and OCD. Students in this program have complex diagnostic profiles including physical, medical, cognitive, behavioural, communication, learning and social/emotional needs. The successful candidate will need to be flexible in their ability to work in all areas of our school.
Students may demonstrate challenging behaviours:
- Aggression towards self & others (hitting, biting, self biting)
- Destructive behaviour (throwing, breaking)
- Disruptive behaviour (crying, screaming)
- Unsafe behaviour (running, limited awareness of surroundings and personal safety, escape/avoidance, general defiance and tantrums.)
This position will include working with; wheelchairs, walkers, mobility aides and speech devices. The position will require the candidate to support students in:
- Supervision and support with toileting routines
- Supervision and support when eating
- Supervision and support with dressing (putting on coat, boots, etc.)
- The ability to lift up to 50lbs
The successful applicant will be required to complete a The MANDT System course if they do not already have The MANDT System certification.
Support Staff Temporary Roster
CBE Human Resources manages a roster of contingent casual on-call workers who are engaged to temporarily replace staff absences and to work on short-term assignments. Work assignments may be scheduled in advance or the morning of the job. Casual roster staff enjoys the flexibility of working in schools and departments full-time or part-time with a minimum commitment of two days per week. Position Description
Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Teacher:
Educational Instruction and Support:
- Provides educational instruction for students.
- Supports students in accessing technology.
- Facilitates and encourages the development of the student’s self-esteem and independence through established programs and techniques.
- Encourages students to develop and maintain positive interaction.
Individualized Program Planning:
- Provides input into planning the student’s Individual Program Plan (IPP).
- Participates in periodic meetings with students, parents/guardians, and learning team members to review goals and develop revisions.
- Maintains an effective professional working relationship within the student’s learning team by providing suggestions and insights based on experience and knowledge of the students.
Personal Care and Safety:
- Provides personal care including toileting, feeding, dressing, grooming, etc., while ensuring student dignity is maintained.
- Ensures the safety of students in the school and community, including maintaining close supervision, calming, or restraining students engaged in challenging behaviors, and assisting with life skills tools.
- Retrieves students who attempt to leave their learning environment.
Relationship Building:
- Maintains collegial relationships with the student’s learning team.
- Works with students in a variety of settings in the school and community.
- Assists with sanitizing educational tools and cleanup in the classroom.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Completion of a recognized post-secondary certificate or recognized vocational certificate in childcare/development or behaviour management with demonstrated successful practicum experience working with students with diverse needs.
- The completion of at least one full year (ten courses) of course work towards an undergraduate degree in education is also acceptable.
- Other equivalent combinations of directly related education and directly related experience may also be considered.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR certificates.
