ABOUT THE ROLE
Reports to: The Senior Director Advisory & Engineering Services
Exergy is seeking an experienced Mechanical Designer to support the design and delivery of pilot-scale and prototype mechanical systems. This role is hands-on and fast-paced, requiring practical experience across piping, pressure equipment, structural, and general mechanical equipment.
The successful candidate will be responsible for producing practical, well-thought-out designs and drawings that are straightforward to build and easy to operate. Work will be closely coordinated with engineers, fabrication shops, and field teams.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Support layout and design of pilot plants and modular systems (e.g., skids or containerized units)
- Develop 3D models for mechanical systems and equipment. This includes equipment playout, pipe routing, steel design, and detailed equipment design.
- Produce complete, fabrication-ready drawing packages (GAs, piping isometrics, weld details, machined parts, and mechanical assemblies)
- Coordinate with engineers, vendors, and fabricators to ensure designs are practical and buildable.
- Incorporate fabrication and field feedback into design improvements.
- Work effectively in a fast-paced environment with evolving requirements.
- Active, hands-on involvement in fabrication, assembly, and testing is expected; the role requires a strong willingness to get into the shop and support build directly.

Experience Requirements:
- Diploma or certificate in Mechanical Design, Drafting Technology, or a related field
- 5 - 10+ years of hands-on mechanical design and drafting experience in industrial environments
- Proven experience taking designs from concept through to fabrication and field implementation
Experience in at least one Requirements:
- Piping systems (small-bore welded and plastic piping, tubing systems such as Swagelok)
- Pressure equipment (vessels, piping spools, pressure-retaining components)
- Structural/skid design
- Tanks and general process equipment (pumps, exchangers, instruments, etc)
Practical Experience (Critical)
- Direct exposure to fabrication environments (welding, machining, assembly) and/or field installation
- Ability to design with awareness of real-world constraints such as access, fit-up, and assembly, and operability
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD Plant 3D is required; equivalent 3D CAD platforms will be considered
- Ability to produce clear, complete, fabrication-ready drawings
- Solid understanding of dimensioning, datums, and realistic tolerancing
- Basic working knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards (e.g., pressure equipment codes, piping codes, welding codes, and drafting standards)
- General familiarity with common ASTM materials and specifications

- Able to learn new equipment and systems quickly
- Takes ownership of work quality and follow through to completion
- Receptive to technical feedback and able to iterate efficiently
