As a Reality Capture Specialist, you will act as a subject matter expert in geospatial data acquisition and processing. You will coordinate and deliver accurate 3D data to support design, construction, and asset management across infrastructure, land, utilities, and transportation projects. You will manage reality capture requests and use tools such as terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) with LiDAR and photogrammetry, thermal and multispectral sensors, and Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) scanners to collect and process 3D sensor data into deliverables. You will also apply artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), workflows and cloud-based GIS platforms, working with project teams to integrate reality capture into project delivery while improving data quality, reducing rework, and supporting risk management in data collection environments. Primary duties include:
- Coordinate and perform reality capture surveys, ensuring accurate and efficient data acquisition using advanced technologies such as 360 TLS, multi-sensor RPAS, SLAM, and mobile mapping systems.
- Manage post-processing of reality capture datasets, including point cloud registration, classification, feature extraction and creation of deliverables.
- Organize, distribute, validate, and maintain reality capture datasets internally and on cloud-based GIS platforms and databases.
- Ensure data integrity, fidelity, accessibility, and compliance with organizational standards.
- Work closely with leaders, project managers, engineers, surveyors, drafters and other interested parties to integrate reality capture solutions.
Qualifications
- A completed 2-year technical diploma in the field of Surveying, Geomatics or related and at least 3 years of experience in a reality capture surveying environment.
- Advanced RPAS/VLOS certification and valid eRailSafe certification is required.
- A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalency) with no more than 6 demerits OR a Class 5 Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, and no current charges or suspension pending is required.
- Experience working with reality capture technologies such as 360 TLS, multi-sensor RPAS, SLAM, and mobile mapping is required.
- Advanced understanding of reality capture surveying principles, AI solutions, ML model-based workflows, cloud solutions and experience is essential.
- The successful applicant will demonstrate strong organizational and collaborative skills, along with excellent communication and problem solving.
Working Conditions: Works in an office environment as well as outdoors in a field environment with exposure to various hazards.
Pre-employment Requirements
- Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.
- Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
Workstyle
- This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.
