PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The Workers Compensation (WC) Specialist has the responsibility for the effective, efficient, case management of Workers' Compensations claims on an assigned geographic area for Western Canada (Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan). The Specialist will have the ability to achieve high level outcomes through timely and systematic case management of on duty injury/incident claims and manage workplace accommodations that are safe, timely, and cost effective. This position can be based in Calgary, Winnipeg or Port Coquitlam.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Manage all WCB Claims in assigned geographic area to ensure application of WCB policy with the goal of mitigating lost time including duration of lost time, claim entitlement as well as cost mitigation and recovery, including cost relief where applicable
- Initiate timely interventions to maximize cost avoidance and cost recovery in day-to-day case management and Return To Work (RTW) planning
- Oversee and review WC Financials (Premiums, cost statements, experience rating statements, invoices, future liability of claim costs) to confirm accuracy of charges to the Company and maintain effective statistical record keeping
- Act as primary contact with Workers' Compensation Boards (WCB) in assigned geographic areas in Western Canada
- Educate/coach Supervisors/Managers in Operations regarding their roles and related responsibilities to meet legislative guidelines of Workers’ Compensation for offers of modified work, duty to accommodate
- Initiate and assist with return to work based on medical restrictions and required clearances
- Conduct detailed review of monthly accident cost, invoices and experience rating statements for accuracy. Oversee and ensure data input
- Develop and maintain WCB metrics within geographic area to monitor trends, identify costs and cost savings and return on investment for CPKC’s RTW Program
- Manage WCB deposit and assessment accounts to ensure the Company has appropriate workers’ compensation coverage
- Manage audits of WCB payments to injured employees
- Manage the preparation and presentation of WCB claim appeals to the Appellant Boards including the submission of written appeals and participation at oral hearings
- Liaise and work collaboratively with internal Teams as well as external Stakeholders such as WCB to ensure a safe and timely return to work for injured employees
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Degree, diploma or certificate in case management; or in related field or specialized courses relevant to WCB claims matters
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in workers compensation claims and program management; direct experience with a Provincial WCB and/or experience in managing Workers’ Compensation appeals is an asset
- Strong working knowledge of Workers’ Compensation boards policy, procedure and legislation; Federal health and safety legislation and insurance benefit plans
- Experience creating and managing RTW plans that focus on recovery in the workplace
- Strong interpersonal skills at "relationship building level" for working and co-operation with internal stakeholders, WCB’s and unions and for employee service
- Experience in negotiating, listening, conflict resolution and mediation skills
- Strong software skills – Word, Excel, Outlook, and SAP

Management Conductor Program
Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
