As a Streetlight Design Technologist, you will support the construction and maintenance of street lighting systems. Your duties include design, review, tendering, inspection, and construction coordination for new and upgraded streetlights throughout the City of Calgary. Primary duties include:
- Prepare construction packages for maintenance and capital projects, including analysis of the existing system, site visits to test circuits and confirm existing infrastructure, electrical design, lighting analysis (using AGi32 software), voltage drop calculations, Utility Line Assignment (ULA) applications, and cost estimates.
- Complete inspections upon work completion to test circuits and award Construction Completion Certificate (CCC) and Final Acceptance Certificate (FAC).
- Manage street lighting approved materials and inventory.
- Represent Mobility's interests on street light matters ensuring that street light inquiries (e.g., citizen 311s and councilor requests) are responded to in a timely, complete, and defensible manner.
- Act as the subject matter expert to both internal and external interested parties to successfully address inquiries, including subdivision and major project reviews.
- Review development permit applications to assess conflicts with streetlight infrastructure, and preparing design drawings, cost estimates, tenders, and purchase orders to remove the identified conflicts.
- Manage 5G wireless infrastructure installations, providing subject matter expertise, conducting inspections, and acting as champion to ensure construction and installation does not negatively affect the street light system.
- Project managing maintenance and capital projects through inception, tender, and construction. Overseeing project budgets, monitoring and reporting progress and expenditures.
Qualifications
- A completed 2-year diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or Electrical Engineering Technology and at least 5 years of experience in Street light design or a closely related field is required
- Previous or other related experience working with an electrical utility preparing street light designs and managing streetlight construction projects is required.
- A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent), with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending.
- Access to a personal vehicle for business use is required.
- Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and lighting design software AGI32 will be considered an asset.
- Knowledge of Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) and Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) will be considered an asset.
- Familiarity with ROADS operating processes including, excavation permits, street use permits, concrete & asphalt repairs, E-Permits and the Temporary Traffic Control Manual will be considered an asset.
- Experience performing voltage drop calculations will be considered an asset.
- Experience with electrical trouble shooting operating photo electric relays and service cabinets to identify faulted underground conductors will be considered an asset.
- Experience with Utility Alignment Permits using Calgary Rights of Way Management System (CROWM) will be considered an asset.
- Experience interpreting structural drawings for vertical steel structures and concrete foundations (Cast in Place and Pre-cast) will be considered an asset.
- A Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) designation is an asset.
- Excellent communication skills, the ability to work well within a team environment, high attention to detail, good initiative and self-motivation.
Working Conditions: Office environment and regular site visits with exposure to major and minor hazards including testing live electrical circuits, weather conditions year-round, and exposure to vehicular traffic on residential and major roads. This position conducts work using hand tools and a 40lb telescoping device for testing. Interacts with disgruntled contractors and citizens.

Workstyle: This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.
Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.

Hours of work: 35 hours per week (Standard work week)
Days of work: This position works a 5-day work week with one day off in a 3 week cycle.
