Educational Assistant C - MGEU - 6 hours per day
About the role
Under the supervision and direction of the Principal and/or designate, the Educational Assistant C is responsible for providing both instructional and general assistance to individual or small groups of students with educational/development disabilities and/or students receiving inclusive education support and/or behavioural difficulties; providing assistance to teachers as required; supervising students as required; and other various duties.
Duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
Provides instructional assistance to individual or small groups of students who are experiencing difficulties with meeting educational outcomes; assists with the general reinforcement of skills identified by the teacher/resource teacher. Assists students in completing assignments and developing their study and organizational skills; assists student in remaining focused on tasks; and follows up on assignments as required.
Provides general assistance to individual or small groups of students as required. Assists with speech/language therapy as required. May assist with the implementation of the Individual Educational Plans (IEP) and Behaviour Intervention Plans (BIP) and reinforcement of targeted goals. As directed by physiotherapist, may perform simple physiotherapy exercises for students including manipulating limbs and assisting with various exercises as required. May occasionally assist with personal care and hygiene including toileting, dressing, undressing, feeding, and laundry; lifts and moves students, as required. May adapt environment to accommodate wheelchairs, as required; escorting students during out-of-school events. Ensures students are dressed appropriately before participating in outdoor activities.
Provides assistance to teachers as required . Organizes and prepares educational materials for academic/social skills and cultural programs. Provides assistance in marking tests/exams, assignments and projects as required. Observes and records student progress, behaviour, and performance; and reports observations to teachers. Maintains records; organizes and maintains files and materials for students. Under the direction of the teacher, monitors student attendance and contacts Parents/Guardians as required. Attends and participates in team meetings as required. Provides assistance during Field Days, Field Trips and other special events.
Supervises students during the temporary absence of a teacher, during lunches, noon hour activities, and recesses; monitors small groups during academic and instructional sessions. Monitors the safety of students who are transported during loading and unloading and riding of buses as required. Monitors and assists with controlling disruptive behaviour in and out of classrooms and school activities which may require student safety interventions in crisis situations and/or removal from classroom; applies behaviour management procedures.
Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties including, administering First Aid to students and completing accident reports as required; administering necessary medications in accordance with established guidelines; performing approved health care procedures for identified student(s) as required; and may provide translation services for students, school and parents as required.
Performs other related duties within this classification and related classifications not exceeding skills and capabilities as required.
Qualifications
Complete secondary education or equivalent related work experience Minimum of 1 year experience working with students with social, academic, and/or behavioural difficulties Valid First Aid and CPR certificates Educational Assistant Diploma or Certificate an asset Valid Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCI) certificate is an asset (will provide training and/or re-certification)
